KLOS - Shooting Itself in the Foot

Want to know how the average Joe KLOS listener views all of the recent changes? Here is an excerpt from Turk's letter to Don this morning at www.laradio.com

I don’t know what has happened to my favorite station. I’ve about given up. Why do they change things? It seems like the music changes all the time at KLOS. It is hard to explain because I’m sure there is a way to say that but I don’t know the technical terms. Somebody I had never heard of before replaced Uncle Joe Benson. How can that be? I started listening to him when I was in college in the early 1980s. He just disappeared. And now some of my favorite weekend shows are gone. And Jim Ladd keeps getting moved later and later into the night.
What the hell is going on?"

Indeed. What the hell IS going on?

They made some music changes about two weeks ago. Slightly more contemporary - and the numbers are up significantly. So at least early on, they may be on the right track.

Wow, if this mix of crap has brought up the numbers I can't even imagine who is listening. I guess I will have to find a new station because it's obvious they don't value their core listeners. Maybe I will try 100.3 the sound or Jack. Could another 95.5 deserter please point me in the right direction.

thanks

I noticed that they no longer call themselves "Classic Rock" on the air. Their imaging is something like "Southern California's Best Rock". The music has rolled forward about a decade and also leans a bit more pop, at least during the day. Isn't that "Somebody I had never heard of" guy actually Bob Buchman, the boss? I never did hear why Uncle Joe was demoted...

KLOS announced a few weeks ago that they were going active rock. It's actually a good move if they can get the music mix right. They still play classic rock, but are adding more current music to the playlist. The change in afternoon drive was purely a money issue.
They get a PD and afternoon jock for one price. At least they're not voice tracking.

KLOS never announced they were going Active Rock. That is a completely different format.

They've just made the station slightly younger and broader. The first two weeks with the new music mix have been very favorable.

What's the big change? I don't see where they have updated their sound. This is from the 5pm hour today. It is almost all 70's music.

I know it's considered a different format all together, but I did read it in a radio newsletter, unfortunately since I get so many I don't remember which one it was. It was about 2 weeks ago and it was supposedly a quote from the PD. The writer could have got it wrong as writers sometimes do, but I did read it and thought it odd. I'll start a search for the article...

I am not seeing where they updated their music either. I looked at their music logs for three entire days and it looks the same. Updating it to me would be heavier doses of hair bands and additions like Dio etc. Also a much bigger chunk of the nineties from bands like Pearl Jam, STP, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Collective Soul, Foo Fighters etc. Also less beetles, OK this might be a personal preference but I think it makes a classic rocker sound really old leaning.

gotta wonder about them long term....read in the Wall Street Journal today about how Citadel narrowly escaped loan defaults by scrounging together the $2 million minimum payment, but they have cash on hand requirements that they are not likely to be able to meet. Does someone else swoop in and revamp it all?
