KLove coming to Columbus?

It's finally a done deal..

EMF Broadcasting has purchased the CDR Network of Cedarville University...

From Radio-Info's Taylor on Radio:

"Educational Media Foundation is the parent of the contemporary Christian “K-Love” and Christian rock “Air 1” syndicated formats, and it’s K-Love that apparently benefits from this $2,325,000 purchase"

"Dayton-area WCDR, Cedarville (a Class B at 90.3). WOHC, Chillicothe, a Class A at 90.1 with a construction permit to upgrade to B1. And two Class As – WOHP, Portsmouth at 88.3 and WOCU, Sinking Spring at 90.7. "

"One of the Cedarville University translators is in Columbus, which helps K-Love crack market #36."

Will be interesting to see if EMF puts KLove on 88.3 in Columbus or goes with Air1...

Air1's South Vienna signal (WOAR 88.3) Already reaches the western edges of Franklin County on a car radio most days.

let the battle between K=love 88.3 and 104.9 The River begin. Though I will say I predict the River will still win out due to signal and local operation.

Columbs is a very LOCAL market.. Rim shots and translators will be nice, but overkill with River doing a great job and "U" being specific to their niche... Not much will change.. Nice to have variety...

What will really be interesting is what they will do in Chillicothe where the river is on 89.3 and k-love is on 90.1. Another interesting thing is what EMF will do in Portsmouth since they already have K-love on 94.9. Air 1 might firee up there. I wouldn't be suprised if they didn't offer to buy 91.5 WHKC to put k-love on and use 88.3 for air1.

When 90.1 upgrades to a B1 it will reach the southern part of Franklin County... I can already get it in the car most days here in N. Columbus (sometimes better than the 88.3 Translator)..

I could see them putting air1 on the Portsmouth station.. They also got a CP for 90.7 that will cover the peebles area.. I could see that going KLove (extending KLove's reach to the west of 94.9's South Webster signal).. The River's non com signals are 100% voice tracked and completely automated (ran out of the columbus 104.9 studios)

It will also be intresting what they do in Dayton as 96.9's signal overlaps some of the area of 90.3 WCDR's 43 kW signal which covers South Western Ohio very nicely... and helps cover the gap between Dayton and Cinci's 104.3 signal... Needless to say KLove is filling in Ohio fairly nicely with signals.

Speaking of The River.. They recently sold their Portsmouth reaching signal to another Christian operator... I wonder if they would let go of Chillicothe at some point? Would EMF go for their station there for an Air1 signal?

I think they did that so that listeners out of 104.9s range would have their music available to listen too. But I haven't notice them being a full simulcast. The 90.7 frequency is from Sinking Springs which would cover Pebbles.

The Non Com - River's are not a simulcast at all.. They run from their own automation system at the 104.9 studios. I think the Portsmouth station also cut away at times for paid programming local to that station before sold.

Digging around FCC documents....

Found that 88.3 W202CC Translator in Columbus will not be re-broadcasting KLove/Air1 when the transfer is completed from Cedarville Univ to EMF (Currently 88.3 airs WCDR-FM via satellite feed)

Appears EMF is wanting to rebroadcast:

W202CC, COLUMBUS, OH - KGCL(FM), JORDAN VALLEY, OR VIA SATELLITE

KGCL-FM appears to be 'currently' airing a Spanish Christian format that LMAs some FMs from EMF... http://www.nuevavida.com/

klove sucks and tricks their audience to keep giving money! why do you guys fall for such things? open yourBible ans start reading it and quit obsessing about klove in columbus.

Wilson, please step down for the pulpit. You are sounding a bit crazy up there.

It sounding like on the FCC files that EMF don't want any piece of River. I guess they don't want look like the corporate bully messing with the Local (Big in their own rights) Christian stations (Radio U and The River). They just want to get in where they can fit in.

And that means one more religious station in town. I know we a few on radio in town for sure.

EMF does not feel they need to try and compete against already established "local" Christian Radio that is along the lines of their current KLove/Air1 formats ... They understand WCVO and WUFM are totally doing their thing well already in this market and don't need to step on that. People can "say" what they want about EMF ... however they are still humans. the RNV Spanish Christian format is not something heard currently in this market so it should fit in fine on the small 88.3 Translator. (mind you 88.3's translator is in the NON-COM area so it can't really do much but rebroadcast another NonCom license) so at least its providing something not already in the market... honestly the folks working at EMF are down to earth good hearted people who believe in what their doing (even if those who are not Christians dont like what their doing) .. and yes while thier a ministry they are still a business and have to look out for that.. they also are not trying to take over every station in america ... in fact recently they have helped clear channel and other broadcasters out by letting go some of their Translators which Clear Channel and others have used to rebroadcast HD-2 stations and AM stations providing additional formats (that are not Christian)

My guess this is also why you dont see KLove in markets such as Dallas, Houston and Orlando which have "established" strong local Christian formated stations.

Thanks for the link. I had looked at that page before but had missed seeing the stations they will rebroadcast.

I thought Radio U's music was a lot louder than Air1 so I am surprised it will not be air1.

RadioU does "lean" more heavy rock compaired to Air1.. but there is enough overlap that EMF does not feel like stomping on WUFM... Also you have to factor in W202CC is a very low powered Translator... Any effort to gain a large listenership in the CMH area with it would be hard to do... (I have been a avid supporter and listener of WCDR (CDR) and have found myself listening to their 90.1 station (WOHC) or their webstream via my iPhone over 88.3's signal due to it's hard to receive part in most of the areas)

I had thought maybe they would go with Air1 on 88.3 because WOAR South Vienna does reach the western edges of Franklin County on a car radio most days... but they have decided to at this time run the Spanish Christian format that leases some of their FMs instead.
