KLR Gets a Rock chucked at it.

On Sunday, WKLR tweaked around their classic rock playlist to throw on some 90s music. They also decided, apparently, that the WKLR name was too old, and went with the very creative "Rock 96.5". :p

First off, a real boring name. With a rock format, I really think they should have just gone back to "The Planet", but what do I know. They are transitioning the names in...last week it was "Rock 96-5 KLR". I'm sure that'll get dropped soon.

Based on my online streaming, it sounds a lot like Cox's former WHTQ/Orlando during the brief period after swithcing from Classic Rock (96-5 HTQ) to Rock (96Rock). Within a year, they were full-blown active rock. Probably would have lasted longer if they didn't own the dominant News/Talker in town...

All in all, a smart move on Cox's part. I can't say its "innovative" or anything, but a AAA leaning AC for the females and the harder AOR format for the males makes it a better sell against 102.1 IMO. And say what you want about them, but Cox tends to do "mainstream" rock very well though their days maybe numbered in Richmond.

It's a real shame they can't be picked up anywhere in Fredericksburg metro with the big 'ole 96.5 translator up here. Who knows why they approved that one when there are like 4 MX'd applicants for the 106.3 translator.

Frankly, I'm tired of the "classic rock" format. How many times can you hear "Dream On", "Stairway To Heaven", "Jet Airliner" over and over and over....

I see why they did this, but I think it'll be a weak shot in the arm to, frankly, a very exhausted format.

The "fix" for most Classic Rock/Classic Rock Hits formatted stations is found via personalities with an energetic (old school Top 40) approach. Most programmers weren't around when the music was a hit and/or being played thus the stereotype that anyone over 40 is one foot in the grave and doesn't know how to have a good time. Maybe you should have gone to the Foreigner concert a couple of weeks ago to check out the crowd.

I think that blue67ccm also has a good point regarding the music. When you depend too much on a small playlist you push listeners to the myriad choices "other than you". Do you have the cajones to throw in some Southern Rock...or pull some smokin' R&B/Soul? Stir it up. Stepping outside the safe circle and being unique with your music and personalities on the programming side may not be comfortable but it sure will bring more listeners=revenue your way if you really know your market.

One of the first things that I heard when I moved to Richmond was how boring the stations are....from insiders and listeners....especially listeners. I have to say.....no one has sold me on being a die hard listener....but I'm hoping.
