KLSU fined $10k by FCC for records violations

From Taylor on Radio-Info:

School-owned KLSU, Baton Rouge (91.1) owes a $10,000 fine for record-keeping violations, in an FCC decision that should be a wakeup call to non-commercial operators. Adult alternative KLSU (91.1) does win license renewal, and this counts as another clean-out-the-dusty files situation for the FCC. The public file violations date as far back to 1996 – 13 years. And the objection to license renewal was filed by Raymond Bigalke in March 2004 – more than five years ago. It’s worth noting that KLSU didn’t respond to Bigalke’s informal objection, which is usually a procedural faux pas at the Commission. Now the FCC dispatches the matter by renewing the Louisiana State University station’s license, but levying a $10,000 fine.

With the state putting a dampener on spending due to the economy and such, does this mean that we will see a negotiation with the state on costs, or will students get to help defray more costs with their tuition input to KLSU?

You input is welcome

What is a records violation and where can I search the FCC for past fines put against KLSU? Doing an article on this story.

Basically the FCC forces all stations to keep a public station record of programming, applications made to the FCC, The station license etc.

For what it details : http://www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/decdoc/public_and_broadcasting.html#_Toc202587573

For the actual write up by the FCC: http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DA-09-1740A1.pdf

Usually if KLSU has had past fines on record, it will come up in the report and order , my guess however is that KLSU hasn't had any infractions in the past 20 years or so.

Shouldn't the professors that TEACH THIS STUFF be on top of this as NOT to get fined? Hope there's repercussions...

Well, Rob Bigalke was the lawyer-happy faculty advisor to KLSU.

And it may just be a coincidence that he was fired just before that complaint was filed.
