A little bird says former KUBE PD Gary Bryan may be
showing up at KLSY along with former KBKS morning host
Chet Buchanon. Both seen in Sanduskyland. I smell a station
positioned in between KUBE and KBKS, something like KISS-FM
in LA. Is this a good move or the next KLSY mistake???

Yeah, appointing a PD with no track record of sucess would certainly fit the trend there wouldn't it?

Gary and Chet go back a long way to KUBE in the '80s. Chet's been doing the morning drive on KKRZ down in PDX for the last few years. They make a good team.

But on 92.5? I smell at least a major overhaul....

Uh-huh. Gary's going to bring back the late '80s KUBE to 92.5. After all - retro anything is big these days! And one can never can play those Rick Astley records too many times!

1. Gary Bryan has a HUGE track record of success. He also has some notable failures.

2. Chet Buchannon got canned from KKRZ mornings two morning shows ago there.
 
Gary has a strong track record in recent years in Oldies,
at KJR-FM, KFRC and currently is at the Oldies Station in LA.
Chet is a solid airtalent.

They may get the job, but there are other strong candidates that
have been seen with Mr Kaye including Dave Wingert, Steve Rivers,
Jay Kelly, Bob Case and some out of town talent like Bryan and
Buchanon. It is the plum PD position in Seattle. L. Adams is
doing a great job now and may get to keep the job. The format
search will probably determine who programs the station.

I hate karaoke. I hate it with a passion. Somewhere in the Geneva Conventions, it says plainly that anyone who plays backing instrumental VCDs to aid people who are drunk and knowingly CANNOT sing is one of the most abhorrent human rights violations one could ever endure.

Think of that the next time some 400 pound woman with a cigarette voice gets up to sing "Don't Cha" The Pussycat Dolls at your local karaoke haunt....

Would a station like KBLX work in Seattle?

KBLX 102.9 FM in the SF Bay market is a soft R&B station, with cuts ranging from the Motown era to today's R&B (non hip-hop). My question: Could an adult R&B station (ala KBLX) on a full-market FM signal, work in the Seattle market?

There was such a station in Seattle in The '80s...on AM. 50,000 watt KQIN 820. It was an amazing station. It was similar to the "Quiet Storm" stations that were popular in bigger markets then. KBKS's original format was an R&B leaning AC

The market "experts" would disagree, but to each adult R&B format tried, there were problems, KQIN was AM, KBKS tended to go off into crossover (segues like "Never Can Say Goodbye" Gloria Gaynor into "Don't You Forget About Me" Simple Minds were not uncommon.) These songs did well in the research maybe, but before JACKs, few people knew what to make of them put together on any station.

When Kiss 106.1 was born, it was an Urban AC. It really didn't do well because of its schizophrenia within the Urban format; whether to be 'lite' or go more aggressive with currents and possibly encroach on KUBE's territory. Plus, they had a morning show that was awful and had about as much chemistry as oil and water.

Between Kiss' birth and now, the Seattle radio audience has grown by about 400,000, so there might be a hole for it.

But then again, there are some owners here in Seattle that regularly look at other opportunities. Clear Channel tried it on 95.7, while a quasi-effort, it didn't stay for very long. I have to believe that CBS and Entercom have looked at the format in the past few years as well. It's likely the format's absence on the Seattle radio dial says there isn't a hole for it here.
