KLSY to Change Format?

Must be Christmas. Sandusky is firing people again.
Bill West is gone, by the way I am not he, Just because I took issue
with KBKS or STAR everyone assumedI was KLSY's PD. Not a chance!
The question remains for the KLSY GM, what to do? Here are your options:

1. Go back to Soft AC. Bring back Murdoch or Hunter or both. The
bad news is you kill KRWM. That is why KLSY switched in the first place.

2. Go after KBKS, but this time with a full fledged budget and staff.
The bad news is KBKS has no ratings, especially 25-54. Could go after KUBE??
Now that would be interesting!

3. Go after STAR. The bad news is STAR is in a dying format. Sounds like they are about to abandon it too. Yes, they're staff is old and dying, but it matchs the old and dying format.

4. Go ROCK! Now we are talking. Sandusky has one of the best Rock Stations in America in Phoenix. Might explain why the phone calls to Arizona steaming out
of Mr Kaye's office this past week.

5. Go HOT-TALK. Now we are talking. Tom Leykis has the number one show in
afternoons in Seattle and is looking for a home. Maybe its time to Rock and Talk. A cheap option, just the way ya like it.

So many options. Bill West is a good man and deserved better on Christmas.
Bushwick Bill is not Bill West, that is my gift to him for the Holidays, though he enjoyed reading my posts Still think KBKS and STAR suck, but they aren't worth attacking any more. Let a new chapter begin for KLSY be it ROCK, TALK or more of the same.

uhhhh...correct me if I'm crazy...but aren't KLSY and KRWM the same company? I wouldn't call either a problem for the other...

Never going to happen...

STAR is not giving up the HAC Ghost. If they were changing format they wouldn't go giving up the secret on their website a good month before the fact. That would be stupid.

THAT would be cool, becuase KISW really really really sucks.

Probably not gonna happen either.

No one should get fired during Christmas, that was really tacky. But it happens. If you ask me he should have been fired a LOOOOONNNG time ago I can't believe he held on to his job for that long while producing NO positive result.

I know for a fact Bushwickbill was not Bill West, though
he got great amusement out of the posts. My guess is most
Seattle PD's aren't posting on this site, they have better
things to do. I do suspect they read what is posted about
them with much laughter. For what it is worth, though I
may be the last to know, KLSY will stay with the CHR attack
in between KBKS and STAR, at least for the short-term. I
agree there is an opening in the ROCK arena and Sandusky (Phoenix)
knows how to ROCK, but I am not sure it would fit with the
other stations in the Bellevue cluster. Let me join in wishing
Mr West success in his next venture, whatever that may be. He
is a good man, so is Mr Kaye.

YEAH thats a problem! Why would you want to go SOFT AC against your
own station KRWM??? KRWM is kicking butt in the ratings, so why in the
world would Mark Kaye attack his moneymaker? That would be dumb. CHR
is far enough away, but still appeals to women. ROCK might be tougher
to combo. If KLSY cuts WARM by a third, who wins? Certainly not
Sandusky!!! KLSY going SOFT AC or AC would be plain suicide.

There is one other option: AAA. The Mountain has never been challenged
and with their PD gone, the time may be now. The Mountain certainly has
more adult numbers than KBKS and KPLZ, plus would fit well with Smooth Jazz
and Soft AC in sales, don't ya think djdan? Just thinking out loud.

From a sales perspective KRWM is a very strong station
and I would doubt KLSY will return to any form of Soft
or Bright AC.
I can tell you for a fact that Sandusky has one of the
premiere Active Rock stations in America: KUPD-FM in Phoenix.
They also have one of the best Classic Rock stations in
America in Phoenix as well. IF KUPD-FM were to launch in
Seattle advertisers would take note. Where else can you
get that ROCK audience? KUPD-FM is also a community leader,
raising money for children and active in charity. This would
fit Sandusky's Seattle image and the format would not hurt KWJZ
or KRWM. Much better move than CHR, HOT/AC or AC. Fills a huge
advertiser hole and doesn't hurt the rest of the Seattle Sandusky
cluster.
KUPD-FM would play well in Seattle, no wonder Sandusky is considering
it for this market. It would attack KZOK, KISW and KNDD, plus draw
some new audience back to radio. Advertisers would love it. Advertisers
would also love a Classic Rock option to KZOK.

Very well said.

The bigger question: will Sandusky and/or Marc Kaye be willing to spend the money to launch this?

Cannibalize your sister station down the hall and bring back a morning show who do not like each other personally. That makes sense.

Unlikely. They don't want 18-24 number to try and sell.

Hello! KLSY has been trying to go after Star for the past couple of years. hasn't really worked. Everybody thinks Star is so vulnerable and that Kent and Alan are passe and done, yet they continue to thrive with their fan base.

Or the fact that Norman Rau is down there. Where Kaye is trying to explain KLSY's paltry numbers and no semblence of a core audience.

But the rock thing does make sense.

There's a small problem with that -- Leykis is under contract with Entercom. And if you want to make Leykis the centerpiece of your station, you'd be crazy.

ANYBODY deserves better than to be fired over Christmas.

Yeah, sure.

I had not thought of a rock format on KLSY...but it's a heck of an idea.

Growing up, KISW was truly a legendary rock station. Now look what they've done to it. Talk in AM & PM...with a talent like Howard I can understand talk in AMD. Now however.....what a shame!!

KUPD os in 15th place, ahead of a Spanish rimshot that *beats* that Classic Rocker. Might need other examples to build a stronger case...

A quick look at TAPSCAM on a four-book shows KUPD is top five
in every signficant male demo and top 2 in most. Beware the
12+ numbers, they can be deceptive. Would KLSY trade a 28th
ranked station 25-54 for a top five in every significant male
demo. Seems like it makes a lot of sense to me, but I am just
in sales.
