There are a few more:

The simulcast of WTTH/WDTH in New Jersey was first to flip, on Octoebr 17th.

WNIC Detroit flipped this past Tuesday (November 1st).

Stations in Savannah and Kansas City went all-Christmas around Tuesday as well. Since, so have stations in Norfolk/Virginia Beach/Portsmouth, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (two stations), and just today, WSNI Philadelphia. There are no doubt others that have also flipped.

There were probably at least a dozen other all-Christmas stations around the country before WLTH-106.7 flipped today (Novemebr 4th).

Amazingly enough, the station that started the "let's go all-Christmas long before the holiday" craze, KOST/Los Angeles, still hasn't flipped.<P ID="signature">______________

Wasn't KLTH expected to go to Free FM, seeing that Infinity had registered an extra domain name for 106.7 FM? Perhaps they've changed plans, or just want to wait until the official launch of the network (with Penn, Carolla, etc.).

KOST started this holiday craze? I thought WSNI-104.5 "Sunny" began all this! When did KOST flip last year?<P ID="signature">______________

Wrong 106.7 - Free-Less Portland

Umm...

106.7 is the frequency for Infinity hot talker WJFK/Washington. And oddly enough:

<a target="_blank" href=http://www.1067freefm.com/home.php>http://www.1067freefm.com/home.php</a>

...takes you to a new homepage for WJFK.

Carolla will air in Portland, on current Stern affiliate KUFO, which is not otherwise changing its music format.

Last year it was the week before Thanksgiving. The year before that, December 1.

KOST is generally recognized in the industry as the station that started the trend.<P ID="signature">______________

We all know about 1067freefm.com, WJFK's website. The domain in question is freefm1067.com. Infinity registered similar domains for Detroit and Los Angeles (freefm971.com and 971freefm.com, respectively).

If KLTH is not going to Free FM, what other Infinity 106.7s are there?

Oh, sorry 'bout that...didn't catch the difference. I don't know...probably a bunch?

Here's Infinity's announced "Free FM" and other Stern replacement stations (noting KUFO in Portland as a Carolla station):

<a target="_blank" href=http://www.infinitybroadcasting.com/freefm/station_map.php>http://www.infinitybroadcasting.com/freefm/station_map.php</a>

Infinity's press release, once again, notes that they aren't changing the format of KUFO. Of course, nothing in radio is written in stone, but I think you're reading too much into the frequency URL.

Just looked it up. There's 3: 106.7 WJFK (already Free FM), 106.7 KROQ (market already has Free FM), and 106.7 KLTH.

Using WHOIS databases can be very convenient in many cases, such as the Jack FM craze, to get a hint on where new Jacks are going. Especially when the domain is registered under an "Infinity Broadcasting", it becomes quite evident what stations will be flipped. Of course, there are exceptions.

Regarding KLTH: Considering that all of Infinity's Free FM domains were used except for the extra 106.7, it hints that something would be on the way. However, as all Free FMs flipped (or in WXRK's case, were announced) on the same day, they could have easily had a last minute change in plans.
Perhaps they want to see how Christmas music works? You never know.

And domains have been registered to throw people off, too.

Or perhaps they're eventually going to hook it up to WJFK's site as an alternate URL? Who knows? Maybe you're right, and they were thinking of flipping KLTH to talk/Free FM, but zig zagged at the last minute and ended up with Carolla and the current format on KUFO.

(One elephant in the middle of the room here - isn't veteran Portland-based hot talker Rick Emerson still a free agent?)

I will say this: Infinity was caught pretty "red handed" with the entire "Free FM" domain registration.

To throw people off of a format change in Portland, OR?

I don't recall Infinity pulling any such stunts before; though, I'm not saying that they won't start. Just curious, could you mention one of the instances where a domain was registered only to build suspicion? I know that they have happened, but I can't think of any at the moment.

The only ones I can think of is when a station considered likely to switch to a corporate format (Infinity's Free FM, Entercom's Buzz, CC's The Brew), and a station that would compete with said station would buy the domain to redirect users to their website.

To play the devil's advocate: Perhaps the failure of Max 910 could have also turned Infinity away from the concept.

Probably one of the worst-kept secrets in radio.

The thing about Free FM is that, unlike something like CC's Kiss FMs, all of the stations have different styles of programming. WJFK and WCKG both air Bill O'Riley, while KLSX is a full-blown hot talker. With JACK, Kiss FM, The Brew, La Preciosa, and others, you know what you are getting when you hear the branding. Free FM seems to be more of a grab bag, for now at least.

Re: Infinity Portland

Maybe 1067freefm and freefm1067 were registered for the same station, so if someone mistyped the URL they wouldn't accidentially come across 1) a "this station sucks" page, 2) an "adult" website, 3) a bland 'search what you're looking for with a bunch of overseas advertisers that would LOVE to get your credit card number,' and/or 4) spyware-loading website (if you're actually using IE, it gives you tons of pop-ups while it says it's "fixing" your computer by adding some dumb search bar).

> > (One elephant in the middle of the room here - isn't veteran

As far as I know, yes, as well as with Clyde Lewis. (OK, so reruns are still online via a <a target="_blank" href=http://omnisoundradioone.net/>Omnisound Radio One in Florida, but not on terrestrial radio.)

> To play the devil's advocate: Perhaps the failure of Max 910

Infinity also did a "Guy Talk" format, Extreme Talk 970 (KUFO[AM]), for about a year from 2001-02 - lineup was Bob Rivers in the Morning (Later replaced by Ron & Don), Don & Mike, Opie & Anthony, Sports Junkies, and Ron & Fez (note: the only reason I know the lineup was because I listened to Rivers; they played promos for the other "programming" constantly). When the Opie and Anthony stunt backfired, the station went off the air (by simulcasting KUFO-FM, with the exception of Ron & Don substituted for Stern) the next day.

One very interesting thing, though, and it again involves 970 AM... the station is now <a target="_blank" href=http://johnson970.com/>Johnson 970</a> (KCMD), and was originally a 24/7 All-Comedy Radio affiliate... When Max 910 abruptly changed to Kisn 910 (a far cry from both the original AND the FM version, I might add), KCMD picked up Phil Hendrie and Tom Leykis.<P ID="signature">______________
