KLTO now playing top 40??

KLTO is now playing top 40? Now 3 top 40 stations in San antonio? How about a rock alternative?

I just noticed that too when I stepped out to the store earlier. So much for active rock without the classic stuff. I so second a rock alternative in this town. I guess they're going after mix and ktfm due to the so called changing trends. Looks like they're calling themselves party 97.7.

Party 97.7 ... hmm... I agree I figure it would have been cool to have an alternative rock station in SA.

What I dont get is Univision owns both KLTO 97.7 and KBBT 98.5. So Univision owns 2 Top 40 stations (KBBT is Rhythmic Top 40) in the SA market.

What are the ratings of KISS versus KXXM averaged over a period of 2 years? How much new rock has been played on both KISS and KLTO? How many new artists are on Top 40 stations? Alternative Rock has been a hard to sell market these days. Plus KTFM, and KXXM are attacking the Beat while KTKX is going after KZEP. If I were (Univision) to take away ratings from another station to protect my biggest revenue pulling station KBBT I would flip one of my sister stations to protect it's standing. KLTO is Univisons "dump" station while Cox's "dump" station is 106.7. As you see 106.7 constantly flips over the other Cox stations, when was the last time Magic, KONO, or KCYY changed formats, it was the 80s for KONO-FM, and KCYY, and the mid 90s for Magic. I see the logic regarding this format change. As for Alternative expect it to be on HD radio and not Analog Radio. Unless Pearson Broadcasting decides to pull the plug on KAHL 103.7/1310. If alternative rock was doing well they would pull Electronic Dance Music show Hypersonic off of 101x in Austin and play alternative rock during those hours.

What was Magic's previous "pre mid 90s" format? Was the previous format any better than the repetitive crud they played in the late 90s?

I wish there was an all-electronic/dance radio station around here. The only one I can think of, in all of America, is 94.5 The Vibe in Las Vegas.

As for alternative in SA, I found out that if you have an HD Radio, All alternative rock plays on KZEP's HD 2 channel.

Finally.... I am listening to the new Party 97.7 (DXing it from S Austin), and it sounds good. If Univision wants this station to be successful, maybe they can build a new, or purchase an existing, translator in San Antonio Proper and broadcast Party 97.7 (i.e. 102.3 FM, 105.9 FM)

Magic's format prior to '95 was oldies. It switched from AC to oldies in '88. About two years after KONO got the FM simulcast, Magic started having trouble. So, it went from being a 60's based oldies format to a 70's based format in '93. It was more like the "Arrow" than a 70's pop outlet as it had a healthy dose of both 60's rock and 80's pop. The Arrow, however, was rock based, and Magic combined pop and rock quite well. It was a pretty cool and unique format that was probably a little ahead of its time and, for the most part, failed to catch on.

I like the new Party 977 because they don't speed up their music like KTFM and KXXM.

Are they playing more pop rock than ktfm does?? Or are they more danced leaned? Probably more danced leaned right? I'll find out as I listen more.

So I actually went for a longer drive and was able to find out that they play pretty much everything mix and ktfm do plus other stuff and dance versions that other stations don't. I heard the Forget You song and if memory serves correct, I don't think I've ever heard that one on 96 or 94 before. I also heard a dance version of the Rocketeer song that sounded pretty bad ass. I'll definitely add these guys to my preset to keep hearing them out. It's too bad they have a weak signal cause I think they could actually do some damage to the other top 40 stations, being no talk and not many commercials and from what it seems so far, a little more variety like a true top 40 should have. So is this the new HD format on 98.5-2 then? Or is it still the active rock? How does it work?

Yeah, KBBT HD2 is now a simulcast of Party 977. It changed formats like KLTO did.

It doesn't appear to have a lot of city grade signal overlap with KTFM.

You're right. In fact, with the exception of some narrow "strip annexation" land in eastern Bexar County, it's safe to say that virtually none of the city of San Antonio is within the city-grade (70dBu) contour of KLTO. By comparison, KTFM's city-grade signal (based on estimated standard contours, not Longley-Rice) may cover around 90% or more of San Antonio.

Actually 96.9 would be a better signal than 102.3, plus they want to go against KXXM 96.1
