KLTV-DT Is On The Air

KLTV Tyler has their digital channel now up on RF channel 10.

7-1 KLTVDT ABC-HD
7-2 KLTVWX 24/7 Weather
7-3 KLTV KLTV analog via digital delivery

7-1 is currently not broadcasting in HD, as they are apparently waiting on some equipment from ABC to enable them to pass the ABC-HD signal.

With KYTX-DT, that now gives the Tyler-Longivew DMA 2 full power digital channels on the air. KETK and KFXK are dragging their heels, and probably will not get their full power digital channels up until the mandated July 2006 analog cutoff date.

So 7.1 and 7.3 are essentially the same until they get the HD gear from ABC?
That seems like kind of a waste to me right now.

Yes and no. They carry the same programming, but the quality of 7.1 is noticably better than 7.3. 7.1 is being sent out at standard def, 480i or 480p, which is DVD quality. The feed on 7.3 looks like they take the analog signal directly off of the air.

7.1 is transmitting Dobly Digital audio. 7.3 is simply stereo.

Also, the aspect ratio on 7.1 can be changed from wide, normal, and zoom. On 7.3, the aspect is always locked at 4:3.

I believe that the purpose of 7.3 is to provide a digital, standard definition feed for cable systems. They can easily grab 7.3 off the air and retransmit it on an analog channel, without having to make adjustments for changing aspect ratios, for instance, when going to commercials.
