KLUC Throwback Weekend

KLUC is having a "Throwback Weekend" . Some of the songs I have heard include "Double Dutch Bus" by Frankie Smith, "Rock With You" by Michael Jackson, and "Strike It Up" by Black Box. They play several of these gold titles each hour as well as songs from their regular playlist.

It is Labor Day weekend and KLUC has on occasion had this type of theme on other holiday weekends. So maybe they had this planned all along. I still think it's more likely that this is a reaction to PARTY.

On one hand I can understand what KLUC is thinking. They are trying to protect the portion of their audience that enjoys these throwbacks. By playing many of the gold titles that can be heard on 93.1 they are trying to "spoil the party" and distract attention from the new station in town. Although I would guess that PARTY is so new that most of KLUCs audience has no awareness of them yet.

I wonder if KLUC will just play these throwbacks for the holiday weekend or if they will start filtering them in more during regular programming? The downside I see of KLUC playing more gold is they could sandwich themselves between HOT and PARTY.

This seems like a case of history repeating itself. In 1992 when the EDGE came on KLUC responded by playing more alternative than ever. This didn't work as the segment of KLUCs audience that liked ALT pretty much all switched to the EDGE. A year latter KLUC stopped playing all alternative and rock and went all rhythmic.

Ah, those were the days....
