KLUC when it was a Mainstream CHR

The last time KLUC-FM had been a mainstream CHR was sometime during the 90's when all of the CHR's in country was dying At the time KLUC-FM might have been playing a lot of rock than dance tunes 10 or 15 years ago, I would think. Some of the core artists on KLUC before they had transitioned to a rhythmic CHR in the mid 90's were Celine Dion, Michael Bolton, Amy Grant, Sting, Hootie & the Blowfish, Dave Matthews Band, Pearl Jam, Alice of Chains, Nirvana, Green Day, Sheryl Crow, Counting Crows, Sarah Maclachlan, Jewel, Alanis Morrisette, Cranberries, Collective Soul, Bush, REM, Stone Temple Pilots, KLUC might have played more Madonna at time, but that was about it. I don't remember if KLUC also played the '96 Eric Clapton smash "Change the World", because it was #1 song of that year, I would think next to "One Sweet Day" or the '97 smash from Chambawamba called "Tubthumping". I think that KLUC went more rhythmic sometime in the either 1996 or 97, I would think, when all of the big groups were starting to buy more radio stations after the '96 Telecom Act was passed. Thus all of the core rock artists were gone, replacing by more core rhythmic artists such as Mariah Carey, Boyz II Men, Luther Vandross, Fugees, Will Smith, Tupac Shakur, Snoop Dogg, Brandy, Monica, Spice Girls, & more. I wasn't living in Vegas at the time, too. Maybe KLUC might have played some dance & hip-hop was it was a mainstream CHR before the station turned in a more rhythmic direction. Thus Mainstream CHR also returned to the Vegas airwaves in December 1999 when 101.9 (which was changing owners from Jacor to Clear Channel at the time) flipped from Country to mainstream CHR as "Kiss FM", & they challenged KLUC's listeners, but the format lasted three years due to bad ratings at the end, & the station turned more towards a rhyhmic/dance approach for two years as "Wild 102". Now it's "La Preciosa 101.9", which is a spanish format, which is a TM of Clear Channel. 98.5 is owned by Infinity, & was also by owned by the old Nationwide Communications when the station was a mainstream CHR. If your looking for the best programmed mainstream top-40 closer to Las Vegas, you would to go 200 miles up north towards Cedar City, UT like that man said on the post. It's B94.9 & 96.7, & it's owned by Cherry Creek Radio, & it's one of the best top-40 stations in the country next to a station in Lubbock, TX. Unfortunately, it doesn't have streaming yet. I hope this explains everything about KLUC in the 90's when it was a mainstream CHR. If you have any questions about all this, please include your suggestions. Thanks.

In the 1970s and early 80s KLUC was a rock leaning Top 40. They skipped out on a lot of the big urban and disco hits of the era, although they did play some and I can even recall the occasional "disco super set" in 1979.

In the Fall of 1983 KLUC dropped the 70s rock gold and started adding a ton of current urban and dance music. I remember how different and fresh it sounded to hear songs like "Let The Music Play" by Shannon actually play on KLUC. They even played rhythmic product that didn't hit the Billboard Top 40 such as "Freakazoid" by Midnight Star. They also jumped on early rap like "Jam On It" by Newcleus (sp?). This was amazing considering just a couple years earlier they boycotted huge R&B pop hits like "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang.

For the next decade from the Fall of 1983-1993 I would describe KLUC as a mainstream CHR that was very open to playing urban and dance crossovers. Unlike the full blown Churbans that emerged in California in the late 80s, KLUC still played the big rock hits, as late as 1992 they were playing artists like Nirvana and Guns-N-Roses.

Then in 1993, whatever month "Freak Me" by Silk was a current, KLUC evolved to a full time rhythmic. became a rhythmic (it might still have been called CHR/Dance at the time) reporter, etc. It didn't seem like too radical of a change because they were already playing mostly rhythmic product. Since then, they have played the occasional pop hit, they were certainly all over the late 90s boy band craze, but have been pretty consistent as what I would describe as the "rhythmic for suburban women and teens" station. I don't recall them ever playing Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, or many of the other rock artists you mentioned at the top of your thread.

Z100 in New York was towards a rock leaning CHR in the early to mid-90's before their short switch to an alternative format in 1995 going towards back back a mainstream CHR in fall 1996.
