KLUV "A TO Z"

Why are they still in A to Z mode? I understand Jody & Company are on va-kay but shouldn't this A to Z countdown have ended at midnight? Just curious... Perhaps they are going to put Scott Shannon's True Oldies on 98.7 to save money? They are flipping a station in San Fran on 1/1/09 to the True Oldies syndication... :-\

After Debi Diaz was release, Radio And Records was reporting more changes coming to KLUV real soon, what is going on here??

Surely they won't pipe in programming for KLUV.. :'( If they do, we can certainly say goodbye to the quality of another DFW station.

I know there will be some doubters but I still think that a well programmed AAA station would do well in DFW. It would have to lean local of course. There are quite a few Rock acts that don't get much airplay in this market. Of course, I'm not talking about a rehash of classic rock and Texas country. That has been shown to not work.

The vast majority of advertising revenue comes from the 25-54 demographic. KLUV plays music from the 60's. Do the math. If you were around (let's say an 18 year old) in the late 60's or early 70's, odds are you're now past, at, or about to cross that 54 year old barrier.

And that means KLUV's money spigot is probably drying up. Which means they have to mix in more 70's and 80's (and yes, even 90's) to try and keep their numbers up in the 25-54 demo. And that's where their problems REALLY come in. If they play a lot of rock, how are they much different from KZPS or KDBN? If they play a mix of the 70's 80's and 90's, are they much different than Mix? (Okay, maybe a little older).

But whatever they do, they can't really position themselves as an "oldies" station as much. People hear "oldies" and Think Elvis, Beach Boys, Motown, etc. Not so much Steve Miller or Steely Dan. And while yes, both of those artists had hits in the early/mid 70's, do you think most people think of them as 'oldies' artists or older rock artists? I see an existential crisis looming for KLUV. They're going to have to decide what they want to be years from now. And start moving in that direction NOW. And that's going to piss off some current listeners...

There are plenty songs from the 70s/80s to choose from that would compliment a 60s song that's more pop than rock. The smart pd will find and play those songs that people like instead of playing the usual Rock songs.

I guess the real question is why hasnt KLUV gone to a K-Earth 101 style playlist (60s-80s) before now. Seeing that the well has begun to run dry with the early baby boomers when it comes to disposible income, you would think the big brains at CBS radio would be willing to consider expanding the playlist to include acts from the 70's into the early 80's....

I think after the A-Z countdown is over, they're going to tweak their playlist like their sister station K-Earth 101. What do you think?

Chuck, that maybe the case. As long as they keep live talent on-air throughout the 6a-12m dayparts, I dont have an issue.

The songs KLUV is playing on the A-Z thing no one else plays around here. What do you think will happen? Will they tweak their playlist?

They'll prolly tweak the playlist to be "greatest hits" like k-earth.

The San Fran station is KYCY 1550, which hasn't appeared in a ratings book for a long time. They killed of their failed oldies/classic hits FM station (KFRC-FM 106.9) recently to simulcast news/talk KCBS 740.

"A to Z" is only being run during the day so it should last through Saturday or so. They're going to Tom Kent at night.
As for changes, I wish they'd add some of the 1600 songs they feature in A to Z into their regular rotation. It would certainly make for more enjoyable listening.
Looks like days might be staying local, at least for awhile, with Jenny Q as a "permanent part-time" mid-day place holder. She's good though - I have to give her that.

Perhaps this is a reference to their program of firing jocks "from A to Z." B)rinkman, D)iaz, S)harpe...did they skip over "Dean" on purpose, or does "Z" even understand the alphabet? (But I guess a "Z" would be the last to go, right?)

I finally got the chance to listen to A-Z yesterday for a considerable amount of time and I'm not liking what I heard. I even told my wife that they're probably trying to introduce a new play list. Here's what I heard from about 4:30-6:00pm (thanks to yes.com):

Bobby Bloom - Montego Bay
Tommy James & The Shondells - Mony Mony
Starbuck - Moonlight Feels Right
The Andrea True Connection - More, More, More
The Bee Gees - More Than A Woman
The Spiral Starecase - More Today Than Yesterday
The Neon Philharmonic - Morning Girl
Sheena Easton - Morning Train (Nine To Five)
Paul Simon - Mother And Child Reunion
The Rolling Stones - Mother's Little Helper
Johnny Rivers - Mountain Of Love
Billy Joel - Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)
Jean Knight - Mr. Big Stuff
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Mr. Bojangles
The Critters - Mr. Dieingly Sad
Bobby Vinton - Mr. Lonely
The Byrds - Mr. Tambourine Man
Herman's Hermits - Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter
Simon & Garfunkel - Mrs. Robinson
Walter Wanderly - Summer Samba (So Nice)
White Plains - My Baby Loves Lovin'
Millie Small - My Boy Lollipop
Stevie Wonder - My Cherie Amour
Frankie Valli - My Eyes Adored You

Looks like they're trying to go head-to-head with Platinum 96.7. This play list, with a few exceptions, is awful.

Prior to this A-Z thing, they did seem to me to be playing a lot more 80s music...

Well, it is almost over... I was in the car a bit earlier and heard Waterloo by ABBA. I guess as soon as we hear Xanadu and the Y's it will be back to normal I just can't think of any Z songs? :p

Yer not trying hard enough. ;)

Zip-A-De-Do-Dah - Bob B Soxx & The Blue Jeans
Zip Code - Five Americans
Zip Zip - Diamonds
Zorba The Greek - Herb Alpert
Zoro - Chordettes
