Hi need some information, I have been listening to KLUV-HD-2 for a few weeks now, just found it. I have a Blackberry on Verizon and use tunein radio app and can listen to any station I like. This format is fantastic great "oh wow" tunes I have not heard in ages. I take it with me all over the place, I live in Philadelphia, PA. The question I have is how is the HD-2 signal in the area, does it get out far and are there many drops. The reason I ask is the HD's in Philly do not travel more than 20 miles from the Xmtr and they do drop many times, also there is not a format like KLUV's HD-2 out this way. I notice the main signal is 100kw at 1600 feet or so which is a powerhouse, does the HD-2 carry as far as the main signal...thanks in advance.

At the moment, I can't pick it up at all in west Arlington where I have been able to in the past. Oops, its back (in and out) (portable insignia though)

Thanks for the info, wow W.A. is not too far from their Xmtr site from what I gather on the Radio Locator maps...I guess HD-2's are very weak in every city. I have the Insignia also and it seems like a good little set, very good in pulling in stations either in HD or not...for the price can't beat it.....but there is no AM band and you need either a computer or a car plug to charge the battery....have to admit their HD-2 sounds fantastic on my Blackberry and the music is top notch...

The HD signal runs at 1% of the analog power in most cases. The FCC is now allowing experimental increases, but most HD's are still running at 1%. My experience has been that mileage really varies. A friend of mine in Springfield, MO has an Insignia model for his car, and it really works well. There are some drops here and there, especially around downtown Springfield, but we listened to KTXR HD2 more than 50 miles away from the tower with no real problems. We were able to get the Joplin HD's more than 50 miles from their towers, too.

There is, however, a home HD unit in the KTXR complex, and antenna placement has a lot to do with whether or not you can reliably get KTXR in HD in the studio!

FYI, what the RL maps don't show is topography. Most of the big sticks (100K) and tv towers in Dallas are located on Cedar Hill (aka, the antenna farm) which is the highest elevation in Dallas County.

As I drive around the Metroplex, I find the HD signal to be pretty reliable in most parts of Dallas and Ft. Worth proper. Sometimes it'll drop for a second or 2 in a low-lying area. As you drive away from the tranmitter, the signal becomes more intermittant until the audio goes away, then the RBDS and flashing 'HD' light follow. I've heard it as far north as Gainsville, as far east as Greenville. The signal can be a bit sketchy, sometimes, in places like North Plano, McKinney, Allen, Denton, etc...but, for about a thousand watts, I guess it's not bad. The weird thing is, either it's there or it isn't, no in-between'.

The HD power level is -20db below the analog carrier power so your ERP is around 1000 watts. The inability to dump a ton of RF to account for terrain fill in is the primary issue of signal loss when driving. I live 60+ air miles from Cedar Hill and receive all FM HD services at home on the most incredibly insensitive HD receiver made (Boston Acoustics) the caveat, I use a VHF discone antenna at 25 feet.

If stations opt to increase the HD output to -10db below the analog carrier your ERP would be around 10,000 watts and would help with the fill in issues.

I either listen to the KLUV-HD2 or The Strip.

I get them great on either my Accurian Tabletop on my JVC Arsenal in the Sebring.

I though I got The Strip as far as Sherman I think when I went to OKC back in Setember.
