KLUV Morning Show

I am not being facetious when I ask this.

Do they use a recorded laugh track? Or do they cue each other when they think there is supposed to be outrageous laughter?

It sounds.....forced? Would that be the right word?

Let's see...laughing at things that aren't funny..., yep! Forced is the correct word.

I concur. Canned laughter has been overused on TV as it is.

100% agree - WHY even bother with the illusion these shows are recorded before a live audience. They aren't. My daughter does extra work on some shows - I've been to the sets. The ones that have canned laughter are still closed sets - they just let the crew laugh a little so the actors know how long to wait before they go on with their next line. Canned laughter is added afterwards when sound is mixed. Those shows that do have audiences - the audiences are behind soundproof glass. That is so you don't hear canned coughing, sneezing, and cell phones along with canned laughing.

I find some of the shows my daughter works as an extra to be extra good - like TV sitcoms in the 60's - and they don't need canned laughter to be funny. Try "Unfabulous" and "Zoey 101" - good stuff. "Drake and Josh" is funny and simultaneously clean - something I never thought I would see again in my lifetime. Good shows done by good kids. And I don't just say that because my daughter works as an extra on some of them.

To keep this from getting moved to another board, lemme ask this: this canned laughter of Jody's is not as flagrant and irritating as what "Stevens and Pruitt" used to use, is it? That HAD to be the worst.

Unless something's changed in the last few years, I've never seen a live audience encased behind glass. Why would you employ a warm-up guy if the crew won't hear the crowd, and why would you bring in a crowd if they can't be heard? And why would the crowd even want to attend a taping like that? I've been on the sets of "King of Queens," the NBC version of the old "Jeff Foxworthy Show," and a few more, and at many game shows (Jeopardy, Wheel, Price is Right, Match Game, Card Sharks, etc) and I've seen nothing like that. What shows are you talking about? I'll gladly avoid them on the next trip out to La-La Land.

"Drake" is a cute show and even funny sometimes, but the curse is the network they're on. They get lumped in with the kiddie fare on Nickelodeon & ABC Family/Family Channel/CBN, as does "Hannah Montana," "Life With Derek," "Phil of the Future," etc...all fairly decent shows without adult "themes," but likely not taken seriously because of their network affiliation (I know some of those also appear on ABC-TV, but again, it's the stigma attached to Sat morning TV.) Drake Hall, BTW, just promo'ed his new CD on "Regis" this morning...hopefully for his sake, it won't be a typical boy-band, flash-in-the-pan deal.

Game shows / talk shows are completely different than sitcoms. The time and budget pressure on these so-called kids shows are terrific. They can't afford to re-shoot a scene because a "fan" gets out of hand or somebody coughs. They run lean, efficiently, the crew looks like ants crawling all over the place - only to disappear in an instant once filming begins. To turn an episode a week, they have to be efficient - and only have 9 1/2 hours a day to do it because that is all the kids can legally work. I've been on several sets - on some of them the audience can barely even see - cloistered to bleachers way above the set behind soundproof (and probably bulletproof) glass.

I wouldn't worry about the stigma of the networks - adults are watching, and in massive numbers. Look at who advertises during the shows - Rodeo Ford, Jim Adler, other car dealers, insurance companies. They disappear during the true kids shows but show up on Drake and Josh, Zoey 101, and some of the others.

That is why I was asking.

Well, I don't know why ya'll went off onto TV shows, but.....is the laughter on the KLUV morning show recorded?

Or is it live and just forced? It seems sometimes you hear the exact same laughter at different times.

Anybody know?

Probably canned (recorded).

I dont think its canned. Mitch Carr used to laugh at Chapman at KVIL like Ed McMahon always laughed at Carson's jokes. Jonathan laughs a lot ,because thats Jonathon a very funny guy himself. The others are "prompt laughers" I am sure . Now place yourself in a position of hosting a morning show and you have 5 others who are part of the show and they dont laugh at your features, jokes, etc. How long would they last or the show itself? It happens alot .Tom Joyner for example ,I never found him funny, but when you tuned in his supporting cast was rolling in the aisles or sounding like it.

Cart 1: laugh track version 6

Cart 2: Fake laughter for when the joke isn't really funny

Cart 3: Various laugh tracks recorded on a 2 1/2 minute cart.

Oh damn! I forgot no one uses carts anymore. :-[

Guess the joke's on me. :D

So, they pay people to laugh at something.....even if it isn't funny.....in the hope that the listeners will laugh at the people laughing because the un-funny thing that was said may not make the listener laugh?

(The preceding sentence makes sense, but you may have to read it more than once)

If that is the case...."That's just crazy man"!
