Hello Ya'll

I don't know if this is news or not, but KLUV has re-imaged again by now saying "Greatest Hits From The 60's, 70's and 80's". I also noticed they have been playing Bon Jovi's " Living On A Prayer", they never played that before until now. Any thoughts??

WOCL, which happens to be another Classic Hits station owned by CBS in Orlando, has also been playing "Livin' On A Prayer" by Bon Jovi.

Bon Jovi should come as no surprise. AC is the only format that has to continually change it's music because the audience is continually changing. As one generation grows out of the demographic, a new one grows into it. I did AC radio for more than 25 years and, as the audiences changed - so did the music and the references I made. When I started doing the format, the core artists were Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand and people knew who "Howdy Doody" was.......by the time I left, those core artists were nowhere to be found and Howdy Doody was "ancient history" that nobody had ever heard of. It certainly keeps you on your toes!

WCBS-FM plays that one regularly as well. I was a bit taken aback by it at first, but really, it's no surprise that this song would test well with their target audience.

Also not too surprised that they dropped the "70's and More" tagline. I think listeners like being given the impression that there's variety, even if it really is still primarily 70's. Of course, maybe it's just me, but it seems like lately KLUV has been changing its jingles and/or slogans every 6 months or so.

Since you're talking about similarities between CBS stations in different markets across the country, do you think this decision (to emphasize 80's now) was made locally in Dallas, or was the decision made nationally and comes down the pike from coporate?

I didn't know WCBS-FM/NY plays "Livin' On A Prayer" by Bon Jovi as well. It wouldn't be surprising to me at all. I know they could play something like that, even WJMK/Chicago could possibly play something like that too. I know WCBS-FM and WJMK plays "Hungry Like The Wolf" by Duran Duran though.

I also heard KRTH/LA has been adding a lot of New Wave 80's songs. I saw they play songs like "Don't Dream It's Over" by Crowded House and "(I Just) Died In Your Arms" by Cutting Crew. They could start adding 90's songs soon before waiting till the end of the decade.

I also heard WOCL/Orlando did play a few 90's songs like "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" by Aerosmith from '99. They also played "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" by Nikki French which is probably from the early 90's or mid 90's and "Black Velvet" by Alannah Myles which was released in '89, but it didn't charted till '90.

I think it would take these Oldies/Classic Hits stations till the end of the 10's to start playing 90's music.

It seems like 60's, 70's and 80's music lasted on Oldies/Classic Hits stations for quite some time and 70's and 80's music lasted on AC stations for quite some time. When WCBS-FM/NY adopted the Oldies format back in 1972 they play music from 1955 through 1963 which were classified as Oldies music in 1972. If that were the case for WCBS-FM in 2012 then they would be playing music from 1995 through 2003, then that said everything from Alanis Morissette, Sheryl Crow, Shania Twain, Backstreet Boys, Matchbox Twenty, Avril Lavigne, Dido, Smash Mouth, and No Doubt would be classified as Oldies music by now.
