KLUV

THOUGHTS ON K*LUV's ST PATTY's WEEKEND THING

1) Numerous personalities have quite noticeably had to effort pulling off drawing any logical connection between the artists names and Irish culture where in no such synergy exists

Ex: re-branding the artist Chic name as "O'Chick"->?

2) The "Irish" accent of the voice in the St Patty's Day open sounds exactly like the character Mr. Krabs from Sponge Bob Square Pants.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._Krabs

Perhaps it's really a Mr. O'Krabs / Sponge Bob Weekend on K*LUV instead?

well, i would give them an A for effort!.. at least they're showing some imagination! and Seizing the Moment, its the kind of thing i always did when i was a PD.....

I think next year they should have all the jocks change last names to sound Irish instead. Could simply add a O' to most:

Jody O'Dean

John O'Summers

Debbie O'Diaz

Jenny O'Que

Jay O'Crestwell

we're okay so far...

but Jim "OH" Zippo?

JRZ...they already have the O'(jock name) shouts in the jingle library. I bought 'em in '05 and we used them every St Pat's when I was there.

Peter:

Sorry for infringing on your originality and creative juju!

I got back in 2010-11, so I didn't notice if this had been or was being done then. In other words, your St Pat's day concept didn't make the jocks scream out overtly 'we can't pull it off - this is ridiculous'. (Or as Jody literally said Saturday AM, the MD wants me to say it like this... "O'Chic")

Actually I was going to, and stopped just short of, actually suggesting literally that they go to JAM, get a generic "O" shout, and edit the "O" in between the first and last name of the jock shout (at a few dB higher to punch thru the processing) for next year. But since that's already been covered... there's no need to suggest.

Frankly, the whole thing sounds childish. Play a "green" song to celebrate if you must, maybe even the "Irish Rovers" could get a rare airplay, but no offense, this whole "O" thing = weak.

...don't insult my intelligence... (wonder who said that..?)

Agree. Others had a much stronger, better executed SPD weekend concept with few references to the day, and in the complete absence of "O".

And I'm talkin about JACK. Ol' jockless Jack, what would we do without him and his wit?

Never thought I'd fall for the whole jockless thing. That's how good Jack is constructed. You can attract and retain listeners without jocks, who would have thought? No kidding!

Steve-

Here's a good reference:
Mac, Mc, and O Names in Ireland, Scotland, & America
(By Mac and O you'll always know) yes, an actual book

Dropping the Mac or the O from names It is well known that the Mac and O have been dropped and added at will. In Ireland, especially in the area known as the 'Pale' around Dublin, it was declared that the Irish take on names in an English form. Many a man would drop the Mac and O when doing business with the powers that be, and then add it back again when among old Irish friends.

Perhaps this is the secret programming manual for JACK?

I don't think your average oldies classic hits station is allowed to play that song anymore.

---if I understand K*LUV correctly, a tremendous amount of what the jocks say is actually scripted, as in pre-scripted by a 3rd party writer, and printed on their music scheduling logs before hand; not just positioning, but actual events and other info all pre-printed. Makes them v/o talent

I couldn't pull that pre-scripted stuff off.

I gave up on KLUV 3-4 years ago as the music was changing to the 70s/80s and eliminating what I consider 'oldies' (50s to early 70s). I have even deleted the 98.7 button position on the car radio and replaced it with another XM station.

The morning show is a farse. JD tells a joke and all his minions laugh. JD breathes and they all laugh. "All JD-all the time".

I wonder if some of the 'old heads' there are happy with the evolution, or they are just staying on because 'it's a job'.

Do you mean all his minion?

I gave up on KLUV over 25 years ago because versus other major market oldies stations, KLUV was always inferior in talent, presentation, music library and engineering at anytime in their history. There was a time when KLUV was playing stereo music off of carts and a good deal of them were out of phase and you could only hear one channel out of two. Most of the better major market oldies stations had some of the better A. M. djs who worked at the various markets 1960s top forty stations but, not KLUV. KLUV has always been a talent toilet.

That's pretty stong talk for a guy who is relegated to playing radio on the internet. I'll give you one thing, though:, you've got some balls!

Thanks John;D, that cost me a keyboard... Coffee spew deluxe,
While your comment is spot on, I'd like to add...
Those that can do, those that can't, pretend, and those that can't pretend, bitch about it those who do it...for real

I don't think I've ever seen a single, positive post from Radio Truth in all the years I have frequented this board. Must be someone with a grudge... And really, how many stations that carted their music, always have their cart machines in tip top shape at all times? Anyone who knows me, knows I'm a cart fan. Even I know how much maintenance those machines required! ;D

I could respect, perhaps not agree, but respect most anyone's personal opinion on any matter of discussion. What I do not respect are those who spew these negative comments and attacks on stations and/or persons without posting using a REAL NAME and choose to hide behind a facade.
Cowards do not have balls.....

Wish we had a "like" button around here...

Forgoing political correctness, in all honesty I think there might be truth to this observation. Particularly in the Brinkman days and before (if there was a before). Even K*LUV's ownership was never though of as the best in this market. Consider one example, when Scott Ginsberg performed SWOT to identify the largest vulnerability in the market, he choose K*LUV. Suggests that the observation has some valadity. (Despite Ginsburg's inability to successfully exploit the weaknesses.)

For sure, prior to consolidation, K*LUV did not operate on par with it's current day CBS Top-10 Market counterparts WOGL-FM, Philadelphia or WCBS-FM across the scope of dimensions referenced above (talent, execution, music and technical performance).

But then again, Dallas is not New York, not Philadelphia. And conversely, I'm not sure that old Dallas standards (Ron Chapman) could have gone from Dallas and been competitive and successful in 1980's NY or Philly.

I do remember traveling to Houston one weekend in 1990 and being VERY impressed with the (now defunked) legacy oldies station. Was that KLDE? K-Oldie-FM?
