KLVT-FM SOLD -- MOVING TO LUBBOCK?

I see today that Levelland's KLVT-FM has been sold to David Walker (KJDL) for $900,000. Is the station moving to Lubbock?

Yes. A couple of months ago, it was granted an upgrade from a class C3 (328' 25 kw or equivalent facility max) to a class C2 (492' 50 kw or equivalent max). It will move from a tower in Levelland to one in southeast Hockley County, equally distanced from Levelland and Lubbock. So with the bigger signal, it will cover Lubbock with a decent signal.

Thanks for the info, txchipk.

Looks like the KLVT move-in will give Lubbock its 18th commercial FM radio station.

With 8 AMs and several non-coms added to the mix, that makes for about 30 stations.

Lubbock has to be one of the most over-radioed markets in Texas, based on population.

And don't forget the earlier reported move-in of 97.3...

Lubbock is just catching up...When I went to A&M in the late 80s, the much smaller Bryan/College Station market dial consisted of KAMU 90.9, KTSR 92.1, KHRN 94.3, KORA 98.3, and KKYS 104.9.

Today, the dial is KEOS 89.1, KLGS 89.9, KAMU, KMBV 92.5, KNDE 95.1 (ex-92.1), KAGG 96.1, KORA, KNFX 99.5, KZTR 101.9, KVJM 103.1 (ex-94.3), KJXJ 103.9, KKYS 104.7 (ex-104.9), KTWL 105.3 (though it now targets Houston suburbs), KTTX 106.1, KHTZ 107.3. That's 5 FMs to 15 FMs in the last 20 years...and KLTR 94.1 Brenham has a CP to move in still.

Wichita Falls may get 5 new FM signals in the next few years...longtime CP KRZB 97.5 Archer City is still on the books, there is a new CP for a FM on 98.7 for Pleasant Valley working its way there, KWFB 100.9 Quanah is trying to relocate to Holliday, KVWC-FM 103.1 Vernon is moving closer, and new station KAHA 104.3 Olney.

There's a couple of applications for new stations covering San Angelo...101.1 Wall, 104.5 Grape Creek.

Midland/Odessa will see KTXO 94.7 Goldsmith and KWTR 104.1 Big Lake if constructed.

Abilene will see KWFA 1030 Tye and KNOS 98.9 Albany if they are constructed.

Lufkin has a CP for a station on 93.9 and there is a CP for new station KKUL 98.1 south of there.

And so on...

Well, I bet we will see Lubbock's second attempt at an FM News/Talk station. Of course when Ramar bought 97.3, and moved it to the current Petersburg tower, they had FOX Talk 97.3, KJTV-FM during 2003-04. That lasted less than a year before they flipped to Estero Latino 97.3, KSTQ-FM.

So the question is: with so many small and medium-sized Texas markets with too many radio stations, how does any station owner, outside the top five highest-rated stations, make any money from advertising at all?

They get sold to be part of an existing cluster in the market most of the time. Once you are part of a 3, 4, or 5 station group, there is some economies of scale -- shared engineering staff, office staff, etc. Since some of these small stations use 24/7 satellite formats, moving into a small market and continuing to use those services with a couple of local shifts or using the voice track services of out-of-market talent also keeps the costs down. Of course, none of this makes for interesting radio to listen to most of the time...

Just a guess, but I think not.
KLVT's (current) signal coverage is not appropriate for that kind of format and would not really help KJDL. I see it more as a financial move. Walker will now have a portfolio of two stations. I see him going for a TV station next or maybe bartering for one. KJDL runs no outside imaging. Yet, they manage to get their name in front of the camera, by having those big ol blue microphones up front in every single press conference. Then there's the name drops with Channel 11 during the 6pm newscast that is simulcast on KJDL. Not sure how effective it has been, but it certainly gets free advertising out there.

Sure, KJDL may simulcast on KLVT in a temporary set up, but I don't expect this to be part of a long term plan. I expect that Walker will try to bring in a format that Lubbock does not have yet (as has been attempted on 1420). If anything, these stations just build up the Walker Communications portfolio, making him worth more. The more your worth, well, you get the picture... He can sell them later and after that, who knows? When the dust settles, Lubbock will have one more station. And there is certainly room for more formats here, imho.

1420 has incredibly poor coverage (overall) and the acquisition of 105.3 (once the CP is built) gives Walker a solution to his SW Lubbock coverage issues. Remember 1420 carries Frenship sports (and occasionally Shallowater) and especially at night 1420 has major issues in Wolfforth from the licensed South Lubbock towers.

BTW, Garrett something to make you happy..... Someone is talking to ABC about Jack FM in Lubbock.

I too would love a Jack or Bob FM in Lubbock.

But I hope more of the stations catch up a little with the other markets. The stations in Lubbock sound ok but something that I've been waiting for for a long time here is the RDS feature. While many of the stations in Lubbock broadcast the station name to car radios, NONE of them broadcast the name of the song to the stereo. In fact, some of the stations (95.5, 104.3, 104.9) got rid of the RDS feature (i guess its pretty pointless if they aren't going to scroll the song name). I guess we are a lot farther then most of the West Texas markets, because none of the stations in Amarillo and Abilene have the RDS feature. Midland only had one the last time I was out there.

You go out to the smaller markets like Bryan-College Station and Waco, almost all their stations use RDS.

Sorry to stray us off topic a little. But since we are talking about other stations and Jack FMs and stuff, I thought I'd throw that in since it hasn't been talked about in a long time.

Careful Eggs, Don't open that box,

David Eduardo will come on here and bend our ear about how Spanish stations are profitable around here, how we're at top Spanish market, etc.
Kinda like what's in Hot Dogs, it's a question that's best left unasked.

Jack FM is coming to Lubbock, and it will be on KLVT-FM. As I've heard it, KJDL will not simulcast on 105.3. The Jack FM stuff should be in place by the time the new signal goes on-line.

Oh CJ!!!

You got some essplanning tu dooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously...
I wonder how long that will be?
Just waiting to get equipment fixed around here can be painfully long (lord help the station that has their transmitter fail aroud here.) There's one set of engineers that do the heavy lifting and they work for everyone. Good guys, but they can only do so much. If I'm right, it's Jerry and the same set of guys who had to walk the KAMZ tower a while back...

Well, it may not be that long. Jack FM may be online before the new signal is up. Word is that the station switches over to Walker at the beginning of July. If so, Jack FM may broadcast off the pre-existing signal in Levelland until everything else is set up. Either way, Jack FM will be in the Hub before the end of the year - maybe even before the end of the summer.

Yup, looks like your right. Just wish it was on an already established signal, because then it would make more news. I'm not even sure a signal from Levelland will be close enough to put them on the map. Levelland is a good 40 minutes (with no traffic) from Texas Tech. I'm not sure anyone even knows KRBL exists, let alone KLVT. Whatever signal they get, they better throw a lot of power into it. 10Kw from Levellland won't do it...

Yeah but you know, it may just be the 3 of us. If anyone cared, I can think of at least two stations that would have jumped on the Variety Hits bandwagon right away to steal the JACK thunder. That hasn't happened.

But you gotta wonder, now that the JACK is out of the bag (so to speak), will somebody else try to jump the gun in the comming week?
