KLYX Fm, Clear Lake

KMSC WAS in that gabled wing of the Nassau Bay Shopping Center. That big window was the window of the control room, and the DJ sat with his back to the parking lot. I also worked the overnight shift the first 6 or 7 months I was there and that made me nervous, so I always kept the curtain closed.

The store on the ground floor directly under the station was a branch of Joske's, a pricy chain like Foley's that's now named Dillard's. They had a large heavy wooden front door, which didn't have a hydraulic door closer attached to it which would let the door close slowly and softly. Every time someone would go in or out, that door would slam and make the needle jump on the turntables upstairs in the control room. Ah yes. Those were the days. Shorty Powers finally griped loud and long to the owner of the building, Theodora Heyne, and they finally put a door closer on it. Progress.

Mrs Heyne pronounced her name "Hiney", and we all called her "Theo Butts."

By the way Brian Hill is now head of Marketing and PR for the Houston Zoo. He finally got out of radio and got a real job.
 
I don't know if anyone is still following this topic, but I just discovered it so forgive the late entry. I was hired by Don Armstrong as I lay in a hospital bed recovering from hernia surgery of all things, in 1972, best I can remember. It was in the Buffalo Speedway Motel back then and the crew was terrific. Fowler was there, usually drunk or pissed off, Armstrong did mornings; Brian Hill did evenings and news (if he was a Viet Nam vet that's news to me), Charley Bell who's girlfriend I stole (he added humbly), a guy named Mike Ryan who had the incredible talent of regurgitating hastily eaten burgers and enjoying them again, Eisner did news, Dolby was GM, Kay Henderson (later the throaty voice in Administaff ads) did sales along with a guy who's name escapes me. He was a sales monster and huge drinker, but later went on the wagon when he discovered other things, but always put up the sales numbers so no one cared. I did overnights while finishing college, and Eisner gave me a weekend entertainment interview show which began my infatuation with talk. It was loosy, goosy and everything we remember about long ago, fun radio with all the extracurricular activities that went with it. Some of the best times I've had in the business.
 
Kay Henderson - oh - my - god !

There's a name I haven't heard in years. You say she worked with you guys at KLYX in the early 70s? I worked with her at KPRC from about 74 or so through 76, when I left to move to NYC for my short career at NBC.

Kay did traffic during our PM news block, and she was a scream. Never EVER in my life have I known anyone as flamingly neurotic as she. Don't get me wrong she was a lot of fun -- we even dated a few times and had a great time -- but her neuroses were too much of a load for me.

My favorite Kay Henderson memory is of the day when, out of the clear blue, she started using the word "voyeur" to mean people who slow down to look at accidents. When I gently told her what "voyeur" really means her shocked reaction was one for the ages. She really didn't know.

That's why years later I wasn't the least bit surprised to hear her voice in those funny Administaff commercials. She was born to do those spots. She really is -- or was -- the same personality of that voice. To know her is to love her, and I wonder what she's doing now. Anybody know?

Boy Rog after all we've been thru and you leave me off as the guy who did mid days? No more Austin Healy's for you! The sales guy was Chet Hancock, he pass away about a month ago. Simone Ferguson was also on the sales staff and a gourgeous woman she was! Also had a sales sec. named Pam but I can't dredge up her last name. Are you sure it was Mke Ryan and not Mike Reader? He did have skills.

OK! I finally found the thread I was looking for. I posted a "Where Are They Now" on the Houston-Galveston Board and got some great responses. I was at KMSC from late '66 to early '67 doing Friday-Sunday midnight to 6AM. I returned there in '70 with KLYX, just before the Apollo 13 mission and back up Gordon Basham in news. After he left, I got the news director's spot (along with 9:00A-12:00P board shift right after Ben Harrison's 6-9 gig) and stayed through Apollo 15. Just heard from Ben and he said, "I've got a picture of you and me, Dave Dalby, and Bill Brown lighting up the stogies after Apollo 14 splashdown." I went by Allen Kurtess on the air.
 
BTW, "Late Night Ben" are you the one we had so much fun with when we kept running the spot where you called Almeda Mall "Almenemenameda Mall" when you cut it, and no one would change it?
 
rallen13 -- you say you went to work at KMSC in late 1966? I left KMSC in December of '66 to go to work at KTBC Radio in Austin.

I worked the evening show at KMSC -- 6 to midnight. Did you get my job? I think Jeff Thompson was still PD at KMSC then.
 
I was still there in October '66, but I left in December right after Xmas. Our KMSC careers overlapped by two months, but I have no memory of you. What name did you use on the air?
 
I also worked the 6pm to midnight shift, which means I had to see you at midnight on Friday nights. Help me here. This is embarrassing.

I wne t by "Allen Kurtess". I had the promo that opened with the creaking of the door to King Tut's tomb and when the creaking stopped, David Rose's orchestra began playing "The Stripper".
 
Been awhile since I checked in,, Wife's health problems and all that.. Any one ever find an address or email of Dave Dolby? Sales man that married the traffic girl. Sharon McQuarter?

Last I knew was long time ago and he was in the Longview? area..

WOW! Is anyone "listening". My name is Roger Conant and I was an AE at KLYX (the music station) in the 70's also. Don't remember the exact period. I have kept in touch with Don A over the years (but haven't talked to him in a couple of years). And Simone too. Simone...Chet...WOW. What great memories!(I think!) David Folwer was a character...sorry to hear about him. And Chet...what a sweetheart of a guy. When I got booted at KLYX (by a Tom Perryman, I believe) he got me a job at KTRH (Max Cohen). Dave Dolby hired me...My claim to fame was bringing on Mike Klein Jewelers. Anyone there?
 
Hey, glad you found us.. Any idea where Dave Dolby is now? last I heard was East Texas somewhere,, not in radio as I remember.. Got any contact info on him?

Hey right back at you. Thanks for the response. No, on Dave, but maybe Don A will know. I didn't even know that Dave had gone to East Texas (I think I saw that posted). I will share a story about David Fowler. I was a bit naive in my early sales days. I took David Fowler on a call with me to some bar over off Rampart(where all those apartments were in the early 70's). The decision maker was a woman and I noticed that David and her were getting pretty chummy. Next thing I know, they are both headed for the ladies restroom. It was early in the day and there was "0" people there. I remember thinking..."that's a bit strange, but I guess that's just the "radio biz". Like I say...I was a bit naive.

And my wife(Jan--37 years now) and I went out to Fowlers apartment in west Houston several times. David was good to me. As I look back on it now, he did have some anger issues..but turns out that I had some issues to. Like I say, he was always helpful to me.

As for Chet Hancock, I use to ride with them (Paul Williams was his buddy)when they made some of their "runs" (if you know what I mean). Alcohol was my choice, and good enough for me, but those "runs" were kinda interesting. I attended a mini reunion when Chet was in town several years back and it was so special to see him. I left before many of the others came but I kept up with Don & Simone up until a few years ago. Has anyone ever staged an "in person" get together? That would be neat.
 
You were in sales huh? I was on air.. started midnight to 6, was relieved by Jack Dardin .. Rob McCain was also on with us.. As I remember Rob Lived in Houston Metrose? area and sometimes one of us would have to go get him.. ??? had a drinking problem. ? I moved to midday for awhile and evently to afternoon drive. Where I was when I quite.. I walked one day when Bev told me I didn't have any vacation time ( after three years) and had never taken a day off.. ) Lieing B!!!
While I think of it. Al Pavel was my GM,, and his secretary was Bev Smith Dave Dolby was sales of course and he married our traffic Girl, who looked like Lonnie Anderson, name Sharron ( McQuerter) Had for a while DJ Bill Bliss, only had one hand,, Right one I think. I had my first class Radio Telephone ticket and when neccassary would drive out to the broadcast tower and reset the transmitter when storms took it off line.. 2000,000 Watt stero, strongest in South at that time.
Dang it,, getting old is rough,, wish I could remember more.. If I think of any more,, will let you know.
 
Thanks so much for replying. I found the video on youtube that someone put together of Chet and Don and Chumby and I'll bet you too. Like 4 minutes with a neat vocal behind it that I can't remember the name. Neat to experience these feelings from the past the last 24 hours. Now that I know where you'all are...I'll keep a lookout.

P.S. I remember now that I was tapped to pick up Joe Amaturo at the airport one time for a visit. Remember vividly him saying that "salespeople weren’t worth a S___!" That was a bit confusing also...later RC

And his consultant was Kevin somebody who was pretty scary too....
 
Finally I got a person who remembers me on the air ;D One of my wife's hospices nurses today ask me if I was ever on Radio in Houston area... She and her husband at the time listened and evidently we all became friends and went to movies and dinner often. she even remembered my durn dog at the time.. Dammed wish I could remember her as well ??? A stroke will do that to ya. I am picking her brain now for more info.. She said her husband at the time went to Elkins Radio School of Electronics with me in Dallas just before KLYX.. Going to push her for a picture from that time of her,, cause now she is a bowling ball, but said at that time she was slim of course.. I HOPE she was not one of the Radio Groupies that often had crushes on us on air people. ::)

Finally got a witness!!! yea, haw....
