KLZ had a format called "Number One Music" in the early 70s - basically uptempo MOR (today it would be called gold-based AC). It wasn't until 1978 that KLZ went country.
KLZ-FM was on 106.7 back then, and KBPI was on 105.9. KLZ-FM was rock, dayparted so that it was more mass appeal during the day and harder at night. For a while KLZ-FM was simulcast on 560AM overnights.
The change from KLZ-FM to KAZY happened in 1976, after a little flirtation with code names like Z-107 and KZ-107.
KLZ-AM 560 themselves also had taken the hard rock/heavy metal format as well in 1989 after they dumped country music. The band Motley Crue kicked off "The New KL..Zrock" during a concert at the old McNichols Arena.
I was actually at that show ( still have the shirt with KLZ on the back )..very funny when Vince Neil was on stage scraming into the audience "Yeah yeah man.... KLZ !!", some stoner beside me asked "..what in the f*ck is a KLZ?"
As a joke I told him it had to do with lesbians. He bought it !!
