KMAZ-LP 102.5 (Downtown) appears to have signed on

The Amazing 102.5

Well folks, for over a month now a computer has been running a 17 hour loop of songs on 102.5 KMAZ-LP. That's about to change.

Earlier today, I received a call from the man in charge of what will soon be known as "Amazing 102.5." He brings to this LPFM over 40 years of experience in the Houston market (KMJQ, KCOH, etc). This station -- which is going after a target audience of adults age 25-49 -- is going to have professionally produced jingles, live DJs, and will program "Old School Jams." They're going to put on a station that sounds so good they expect to make a showing in the ratings for the Houston market...

They are using a single bay Versa2une antenna like the one in the picture below. It really is amazing how much area this station covers with just over one watt of power!

Bumping this thread to note that over the past week KMAZ is running frequent "Amazing 102-5" liners, and the playlist appears to have been shuffled and augmented. Also notice that the signal is back in stereo.

Yep, stereo returned last week and the music selection is quite good. Really pulling for the Bread of Life folks. They'd have Majic's #, if only it had more of a coverage area. I'd believe they'll show up with a 1 share or so in the short term.

Bad omen for KCOH though...

What would there signal and range be link 50 to 75 watts I bet this station woul be hurting 102.1 some with more power.

Given what I'm hearing from 104-5 @ 250w, 50-75w on 102-5 would cover everything inside the Loop citygrade and likely stop short of listenable quality a little before hitting the Beltway. 104-5 is absolutely smoking clear up to 1960, & Frog has verified its durability inside of a house in Cypress-Fairbanks north of Jones Rd.

Can't happen though, DJ. Univision would be crazy to allow 102-9 to take on any interference to the #1 Spanish language station in the City, and I doubt the FCC would let it fly in the 1st place.

Purple, 104-5 is crystal clear (and stops the seek in my car) on 99/Grand Parkway all the way out in Cinco Ranch. It's amazing what height will do.

Kudos to "Amazing 102.5", the first LP station I've ever seen that's actually purchased a billboard.
Southbound I-45 on the Pierce just before the 59/288 exit. (I wasn't going to attempt a pic while driving)

Well that'd make sense. Billboard within eyesight of the antenna pumping out 1 watt of pow-pow-power*. I believe that's a first for me as well. Still waiting on the "Joe FM" billboard to pop up on the canvas directly next to the North Freeway at the Burlington Northern RR line...but, alas, nothing yet.

It makes me wonder just how much, if any, of a hit Majic is soon to feel. There's the KCOH/KJOZ combo down on the AM band and Amazing 102-5 now aiming to attract the vast amount of Urban listeners KMJQ has held all to its own for a long time now.

*a tip of the 10 gallon to the good Doc and Nurse Jeff for the use.
