KMCQ is going oldies

Good question, I don't know. All the IP addresses are Seattle-based. And most of the e-mails I've gotten have been about 24 hours after I posted. I don't post here every day, but it does seem a little more than coincidental to me. Obviously that doesn't throw away your theory, which is perfectly plausible.
 
In 2008, Oldies is a different format than what many of us perhaps grew up with.

I grew up in New York City with CBS-FM in the 1970s. Hits from the 50's were very much a part of their format. Even on contemporary WABC they'd throw in a few 50's oldies.

Now as I cruise around the net listening to feeds of other oldies stations around the country, I rarely ever hear a 50's tune. In fact, I rarely ever hear any pre-Beatles 60's either. Most of today's oldies stations seem to have their core in 1965-1975. Some are more 70s-based, a few even play tunes as late as 1986 depending on how well their "sound" fits with the format (Stray Cats? Bruce Springsteen?)

I believe you can have a contemporary presentation no matter what kind of music you play. Or you can recycle the aging halcyons of local Top 40 radio and rely on local "heritage". I guarantee you that neither Pat Cashman nor R&M would do well on a music-intensive format because they are not "DJs".

Even if KMCQ ends up getting something off the bird like Scott Shannon's "True Oldies" or whoever owns the old ABC Radio Networks "Rockin' Oldies" (is it Jones/TM now?) and does a decent job of localizing it, I think they'll still make enough of a splash to attract some decent numbers and maybe goose the billing enough to make a major player interested.

Should be interesting...

Let me try. You follow the rules put in place by the FCC for "1st aural service" to a community and you can move it to just about anywhere that isn't included in an urban designated area (as determined by the census). Even moving to an urban designated area can work if the town you are moving to has its own government, schools, zip code, fire and police services and businesses which sets it apart from the rest of the urban area. You can't normally move out of an area that is going to be underserved by existing aural services when you leave. The problem is what constitues underserved.

We all know that most of the music radio stations around here, even in Seattle, do very little by way of public service. Usually, they bury most of it on early Sunday mornings. So, really, who cares what city of license is on the FCC license. Whether it be Covington, Seattle, Tacoma, or Eatonville, it doesn't matter that much because you are not going to do much in the way of serving you community anyway. But the FCC has the idea in mind that you are going to "serve" you community with first aural service. Apparently, turning on a transmitter and modulating is considered "serving" by FCC standards.

Good answer! My question, of course, was sarcasm about how the whole licensing process is a complete sham. What has Funky Monkey done for Eatonville? How well did KBSG super-serve Tacoma (or even KHHO in their years as a sports station).... Warm covering Bremerton? Unless they're running a spot for an IGA ANYWHERE on the peninsula...I don't think so.

I think you did a great job of flushing out the point I was making with the line about "modulating in your city of license....". I think the city of license these days is ONLY about meter readings with regard to protecting signals in other markets. Easier to protect a 104 signal in Covington than it is in Everett, for example....or they WOULD be on Cougar.

I plan to resurrect the NW History efforts online so at least there can be presence from everyone who wants one. It was housed on the PSRBA site until about a month ago when the group ceremoniously canned my old and sorry butt from a 11-year volunteer effort (their interactive + Soundies efforts)...so I figured the history contents that I used to have there should live on separately so I can continue to dedicate my enthusiasm to that...

Meanwhile the PSRBA does have their annual "Crystal Soundie" which was awarded over the years to many of the people on your list.

One I would love to hear again (and am so sorry, the name escapes me) was the lady who covered overnights for KOMO for many years in the 70s/ 80s. She just was perfect in tone and delivery for what the shift was all about. She wasn't a jock per se, but for the truckers and the cops on the beat she really was golden. Throw her on the 1-5A shift on your superstaion!

And I agree w/ you re: Mike Webb.

AND, darn it all, WE still play 50s hits and near misses on OUR oldies station (some late 40s, too): www.radiokya.com !

I grew up listening to Pat O'Day with his “Granny Peters,” “Mr. KJR,” and “Wonder Mother.” It'd be great if some of those dream team guys were on a station together, but who would listen? Certainly not the younger demos every station is after.

That would be Jaynie Dillon. She's alive and well in Tacoma and doesn't miss radio!!
