KMCQ now 80's?

So, did they decide to make 104.5 an 80s station and I just missed the announcement? Heard today, Borderline-Madonna, I Wanna Know What Love Is-Foreigner, If This Is It- Huey Lewis, Uptown Girl-Billy Joel (great, yet another station playing friggin Billy Joel, just what we needed)
They aren't even tagging the station as 60s and 70s in the station I.D.
I have no real complaint if they're going to be strictly 80s Top 40, but if they're going to be a carbon copy of the awful KJR FM, what is the point?
I just wish someone would finally give me the station I want to listen to. Perhaps that will never happen and I will have to give in and make the jump from terrestrial radio to satelite after all. I would miss the local aspect and DJ's but it sounds like you're all giving way to automation anyway. It is just so damn sad.

I don't know about KMCQ, but if you want strictly 80s music you should pick up an HD radio receiver and give KJR-FM HD2 a listen. I started listening this past week and am enjoying it. The only hassle is the station id they stick in every 3 or 4 songs, but that's over quick (unlike a set break for commercials). (And I'm just hoping that Blondie's inane "man from mars" rap isn't on their play list somewhere!)

And if you want a station that won't change formats every couple weeks or whatever, don't listen to KMCQ. THe music is simply a placeholder till they can sell the station...

Thanks. I must have tuned in during an 80s cycle because recently they've been back on track with 60s and 70s. But they are kind of all over the map. Oh well. Maybe someday someone will get it right with oldies/classic hits in this town.

I understand the frustration, and First Broadcasting doesn't care if the format is all over the wall.... complaining about KMCQ's format is like beating a dead horse.. it won't get any results, no matter what.

WOW! It's a great concept really. All '80s one week, all classical the next, all polkas another, reggae, blues, thrash metal, sea chanties, alt-folk, klezmer music, easy listening, etc. The possibilities are endless. And since nobody is buying time, actually working there, or even listening, it's a great way to brighten up the FM dial.....

Hope they keep the format wheel spinning!.....

Now we're making progress. I have begged you folks to be thinking in new directions to save radio.....this is clearly some good progress.

Meanwhile...I have been working the "services" angle and have this idea: We coordinate cops' computers around the country and get all major markets to have an accident in the same place during the same quarter-hour. That way we can nationally voice-track traffic...and like the generic "it's eight after the hour" time check we can now have one traffic report for all metro's. "There's a four-car 3-person injury accident on the North side....take alternate routes".

Jack Daniels and I will get back to you following the NEXT brainstorm....

What would be even more interesting is if some reputable radio pros with good ideas could manage to network with these stations doing "placeholder" formats and use them as some sort of commercial free format labs type of project. You could give them a format, and they'd give us a chance to try out some of our new ideas and get some valuable feedback.

Anyone with me?

And how would the bills get paid?

I always thought an all-traffic station like CHMJ up in Vancouver would be a great thing in this damned old mess in the Puget Sound. I'd call it Northwest Commuter Radio. I'd also pick the call letters KCMU because they'd be perfect, plus you'd be saving a legendary Puget Sound call sign....

I'd prefer this on AM, simply because all news/talk on FM simply doesn't make any sense to me, no matter what angle of the arguement.....

How are they paying them now? If its running as a placeholder, it hardly matters what you're running on it. So why not take advantage of that to "test drive" a new format?

You know, that's an interesting question. Either they have bottomless pockets or whatever. A 25,000 watt power bill ain't cheap....

Some people don't think about that and realize how much it costs to run a radio station!

I wanted to do that when 1540 was originally up for sale. Wanted the Kirkland calls on it ... and was going to do computer-driven traffic from Metro offices (just swap out a specific report zone as new info available)....whole thing to be packaged as KARR-154. But the woman who started "country gold Network" (Enumclaw-Bellevue-Everett) managed to grab it first. Station price, as I recall, was under $100K at the time.

Barbara Geesman, if I recall?

I met her once with her husband shortly after they bought KJUN, looking for talent and ideas.....

KARR-154 - GREAT license plate number (and even GREATER logo)

Will be interesting to see if "MCQ" begins to show in the book. I think they ought to run a few spots, 3 or 4 units per hour. One per break

First Broadcasting is putting no effort into the station, I guarentee you they don't even have any sales staff.

I suspect there is at least ONE sales person...who is dedicated to selling the station (and I don't mean that as in "selling avails")!
