KMCQ On

If this move does happen I will not be happy. Let Clear Channel or some other big company take over and put even more boring programming we already hearing. Probably Funky Monkey or a stupid news/talk on FM, I don't like this at all. The government needs to stop this from happening.

More government intervention. That's exactly what radio needs right now.

::)

It would be great PR for KMCQ to use KMIH programming too. It might even give them a few more points to later use with the elected political folks in the area.

Hey Playa.................could they do that? KUBE would freak!

Mr. Steve:

Oh yeah they could....just depends on what Dallas wants. The main thing Mr. Lawerence might see on this deal is the KMIH's programming would probably cost them nothing! All he has to do is strike up a good deal for the school and I'm sure they'd be happy. Give them a new board, transmitter or something. Talk about exposure and PR for the firm! From what I saw in the recent ratings book, KMCQ could do real well by running this format.

KMIH blazed the trail; all KMCQ has to do is now is make it even better by throwing up their stick and by cranking some real power on the frequency.

KUBE's glory days have long since past and the time is ripe for change and competition with regards to the programming.

Maybe a good idea.... KMCQ could carry KMIH's signal 24/7 until they sell the station (KMIH would be on KMCQ, and also on their new 88.9 frequency), then once the station is sold, announce that X-104 will be continuing on 88.9 (with a new name obviously), and segue 104.5 into a similar format that they carry on KMIH (in a commercial version obviously, and if it draws enough listeners or if it even somehow makes it onto a ratings book).  This of course would be if Clear Channel didn't purchase the station, as they would end up having 2 of their own radio stations competing with each other.  However, somewhere in the back of my mind this may backfire also, as it could be seen by some people as exploiting a non-commercial high school station, in order to get more listeners onto a advertising-supported commercial station.  I don't see it that way though, since First Broadcasting so far has done alot more for KMIH than any other broadcaster would have done, to keep them on the air after F.B. takes over the frequency.  Alot of people who loyally listen to KMIH/X-104 will most likely stay with them when they move to 88.9, whereas people who just discovered the station (mostly those who are outside of KMIH's listenable area), will discover the new station as a KMIH simulcast, and stay on it even after it starts as a totally different station, and playing commercials.

I read some more FCC filings tonight about KMIH moving to 88.9.  There's a small minor wrench in the situation that no one's said anything about.  Apparently if KMIH gets any complaints from KPLU (who's on 89.5) or KNHC (who's on 89.5), and can't resolve any complaints from them, KMIH will have to shut down on the 88.9 frequency.... However, radio tuners these days more than likely won't have a problem with this, so I don't expect any complaints to come against KMIH when they start up on their new frequency, unless you're like 100 feet from the transmitting antenna.  I think at that distance, unless you're a student at MHHS, you shouldn't be on the high school's property anyway unless you're attending one of their games or other events.

Remember when 104.9 was The Cowboy? Then it switched to The New Y 104.9, a rhythmic ac type format for like a few weeks/months before it changed to Funky Monkey. I wonder if that upstart is still searching for a platform to launch their new station. I tried googleing their website but it was like www.thenewY.com or something. Anyone??? That would kind of fit with the current conversation flow here.

Now that quote from Tim is the most interesting post on this board in the last few years. About 4 years ago a young guy came into my office to interview for a sales job for our station. He said he had "interviewed" with an older gentleman from "The Y". He began to tell me about how there is this group out there that wants to put an Urban-oriented FM station in the market. I flatly told him there were no available FM frequencies and that I had never heard of this "Y." I dismissed this entirely. But now I wonder. We're talking big bucks here for 104.5, and I sincerely doubt that a local group could pull this off. The mystery deepens.

If this is true, then I would suggest KBSG flip their HD Channel 2 "Classic Soul" to their primary, main channel 1, and put KBSG 70's on HD channel 2..........to stop this "Y" in their tracks..............if there is indeed a "Y", or whatever.

I remembered that website.  Only got updated a few times during it's lifespan (about 3-4 years).  This "New Y" didn't look like it was going to be the same as the old Y on 104.9.  The new one looked like it would have played more current urban music.  I speculated at first when KMCQ first spoke of their plan to move over to this side of the mountains, that this new "Y" station would be landing on that frequency.  As time went on though, this looked less and less likely.  The website is gone now, so it looks like whatever idea the "Y" group might have had, may have faded into oblivion, unless that new "Y" group is still around somwhere and somehow ponys up the big money for the station.

Hmmm. This mystery continues. Maybe "The Y" stands for KYAC, the urban AM station on 1250 Khz until 1993, when it flipped to radio disney. There was at one time KYAC-FM, back in the day on 96.5 Mhz. Could it be there's some oldtimers with deep pockets 'round these parts? They'd have be very, very deep pockets.

And get this.........The KYAC call letters are available. Check it out on the FCC website here:

I was working for the whole KJUN / KKBY / KWYZ / KENU / KBLV / KTOL "network" of stations back when they launched the new 104.9 frequency in Eatonville. I cannot recall any last names but there were some black gentlemen working there near the end of the classic country era. One was Tom (who used to work for KLSY - a rather big fella) and the other was an older guy named Marlon. These guys lead the charge to convert The Cowboy to the New Y @ 104.9 "building a better beat". I have to retract the format I mentioned, it wasn't rhythmic AC but Urban AC or old skool/soul format. If anyone here can maybe put together more from these few details, maybe our mystery can unfold further.

Well, when that young fellow came to see me at the station, talking about the "Y", he was adamant that this was serious and it was going to happen. I was really taken aback and exclaimed "no way!"

In reality, though, it would take someone like urban radio operator Radio One to get in here with lots of money and an excellent management team for an urban station to profitably exist. I will point out that First Broadcasting already has a business relationship with Radio One, purchasing a FB property back East in I think Philly or New Jersey a few years back.

Sounds like Tom Reddick.

BINGO! That's him. Last I hear he's at a CC station in Yakima. Anyone know?

This is pretty interesting chatter! Thanks!

Hmm. I'm putting this all together. See if this makes sense: Ackerley Communications bought the KFNK construction permit from Barbara Groseman back in 1993. A few guys worked at that station and developed a Soul/Old Skool format called "The Y", or "Y1049", with then KUBE PD Bob Case, Ackerley's programming guru who later went on to (form?) Beddrock & Associates in Bellevue. But there was always a desire on some to continue on, a T. Reddick and a Marlon B, and when the opportunity to shift KMCQ to Covington became available, that would free up two channels, move up KFNK from Yelm to Covington on 104.5, and regain "The Y" on 104.9 in Yelm. Can someone confirm or deny this theory?

Correction: Y 104.9 was started when Tom Reddick and Marlon B leased the station from Barbara Geesman. But when Bedrock and Associates bought the Station from Geesman, they turned it into Funky Monkey and later had Ackerley do their sales and management and an option later to buy later on, which they did just before it was sold to Clear Channel. KFNK is licensed out of Eatonville, not Yelm.

I just ran this by my friend at KMIH. He thinks this story is quite plausible and highly likely to be true. But he said one thing that blew me away. The purse-strings in this.....the financial inspiration for this shake-up, if you will, came from a certain very nice guy in this loop with an MBA from Cornell (I don't want to mention his name on this board).........and got his start in broadcasting at..............get this.............KMIH.

And that is the end of the story.

I checked the FCC site this morning and then came over here. No one reported it. I came back from work and still no one is on it yet! I'm really surprised! KMCQ has applied to modify its construction permit for a one step upgrade to a Class C2(8.1kw @ 364 meters HAAT)from Cougar Mountain, dependent on the outcome of 2 other applications, 1 in Bellingham and the other in Forks, I believe.
