KMEL 106.1

I really wish they would switch Formats with KSAN,

I never knew the old KMEL, But my older brother did...

What rating is KMEL??

Can I ask why you would want them to switch? When you say old KMEL what years are you talking about? Pre Hiphop and R&B?

We're talking about switching the old Tom Donahue-era "Jive 95" KSAN (underground rock) with Alex Bennett-era KMEL (AOR).

I, for one, think it should be done. Who do we talk to about getting this going?

> What rating is KMEL??

That's what I want to know, doggone it!

I thought Mario was talking about switching the current KSAN @ 107.7 (Classic Rock) with the current KMEL (Hip-Hop)?

No. KMEL is the only TRUE hip-hop station in the entire west coast. Why flip something that's not broken?

That was the case in the early-mid 90's when it was the peoples station, now KMEL is a joke and plays the same garbage as most so called hiphop stations.

Though I am not a fan of either Hip-Hop or Rap, I am curious what is the difference, music wise, between KMEL-106.1 and KYLD-94.9? I know that one is Urban and the other is CHR/Rhythmic, but is there an actual difference between those two formats?

I would put back KMEL as a true Rock Station

Would be the same as KRXQ in Sacramento
But most people know KMEL as a Hip-Hop Station and before that as a Top 40 station. KMEL (as The Camel) was only AOR for 7 years. Today's KMEL has had a Urban format for longer. Only old timers like myself (LOL!) remember KMEL as an AOR station. And even if KMEL does switch to Rock, I don't expect it to be any different than KMRQ-96.7 Riverbank-Modesto or KRZR-103.7 Fresno. Clear Channel owns KMEL and it would be another voice tracked robot. Now if Entercom or Cumulus owned this station, maybe, but with CC in charge, I doubt it.

As an AOR station, ("Camel 106" as they called it) had the great Alex Bennett morning show, and a cute cartoon logo (a camel, naturally). But as a music station, it was no great deal. It had a restricted hit-oriented play list, and when it became popular, it pushed the much superior and more inventive KSAN (Jive 95) into a more conventional AOR format, in order to compete. At least, that's how I remember it...others may take exception.

Old radio stations, like other things that live on in our memories, somehow end up seeming a lot more special than they actually were at the time.

You are right. KMEL was good not great. I loved Alex Bennett in the morning. I followed him over to The Quake (KQAK-98.9). And it was KMEL which pretty much killed KSAN as an AOR station, in my opinion. KMEL's downfall as an AOR came in 1982, when others joined the AOR war (KRQR-97.3, KQAK-98.9 & KFOG-104.5). Then KMEL changed to Top 40 and pretty much killed off the legendary KFRC-610, though the latter was inevitable because KFRC was on the AM dial.

their slug line was "go for it!" with their late PD, Thom O'Hair, the late Tawn Mastrey, Alex Bennett and Joe Regelski, Geno Mitchellini, Pauyl Vincent, Bob Gowa and MD, Bobby Cole.

Speaking of KMEL, I'm surprised to see that K2 aka Kenard Karter, formerly of sister station WGCI, is now the midday host and moved Sana G to afternoons. I didn't ever think they were going to fill that 4th position for a full-timer on-air.

I say if KMEL has decent ratings, then leave it as is. L.A. is already lacking an urban (hip hop) station. And yes, KMEL is the only real urban (hip hop) format station in the west. coast.

Although, I've grown bored with much of the current urban music and am personally much more of a rhythmic fan and love the KPWR style format, I believe that if there is a strong enough audience to keep the urban format on KMEL, then it should just remain as is. I'm sure KMEL could probably do better if they flipped to rhythmic, but.... there are already enough rhythmic or rhythmic leaning top 40's there. At least KMEL being urban keeps them different from the rest.

CC wouldn't flip KMEL because it's making a killing in billing as the only urban (contemporary) on the West Coast and it's in the top 10 of overall 12+. Also the way KMEL's playlist is structured that it monopolizes the entire urban format with a variety golds and currents singles from the hip-hop, R&B, and soul genres, but particularly the R&B and soul genres. KMEL still hosts a Summer Jam and a number of R&B and soul sessions. CC very much protects KMEL from KYLD (by being more top 40 than pure rhythmic) and KISQ (by being more gold and rhythmic AC oriented) in duplication. It's like WVEE, one of the few true urban contemporaries left in a major market.
