KMEL San Fransico

I think that KMEL 106 is a great urban contemporary in California IMO. It has restored my faith in west coast R&B radio by playing a blend of the old and the new in all dayparts. It has a way more "focused" playlist than any other R&B station owned by Clear Channel. I love their slow jam show called "The Lounge" and the Ol' Skool show at lunch. They of course are heavy on the hip hop titles but show love to Neo Soul like how "The Beat" was in the 90's and Early 2000's. What are your thoughts on KMEL. I baffled by the fact that L.A. can't keep a decent urban station on the air. In LA we have only one urban and that's KJLH.

Circumstances is why LA doesn't have an urban station on full-powered signal compared to the Bay Area. CC didn't find "the Beat" as much value when compared to KMEL was during the corporate mergers of the late 90s-00s. KMEL has/is a major cash cow for CC, thus the programming freedom and ability to daypart themselves to appeal to various demographic groups between 18-49 years.

KMEL has proved that an urban can succeed on the westcoast is just that IMO KJLH should be programed attract hispanics 18-40 to get some numbers. If we can have a full power urban format again it has to appeal to not just african americans but also whites, latinos, etc. The only problem is that KJLH is still trying to appeal to blacks 25-54 but the dwindling black listeners moved to Palmdale, Riverside, etc.
