So has anybody heard details of the deal KMIH has made with the devil to stay on the air on a different frequency? Like, what frequency and are they relocating?

I'm not sure that it's a "deal with the devil", as I heard, from reading in a local newspaper, that they were moving to the non-comm band.
______________

Re: KMIH Newspaper Article

Is that the high school newspaper? Wow, I am astonished at the lack of editing and fact checking. The spokesmen for KMIH and KNHC both display a profound lack of knowledge about the simplest radio facts, the guy from KUOW wasn't any sharper. Even a high school newspaper editor/fact checker should have caught the glaring misstatements of fact in this article. And isn't it the rule that if you are quoting someone with grammatical errors you use the parenthetical (sic)?

Sure I'm being nitpicky since the basic idea was conveyed, but why even print comments like the one about having more money getting you the highest frequncy? And high up on the "bandwidth"?? The non com band being between 87 and 92 mHz... uh nothing between 87 and 88 except channel 6. Then they mention that it is rare to have a non com station on the commercial band which is true but they are quoting a guy from a non com on 94.9!! Did ya know "more people tune their radios through higher bands" ??? HUH???

Sheesh, this really makes me wonder about the accuracy of the whole story.

So what I get is that nobody knows anything except what was in a newspaper article eight weeks ago. And that it's not a very good newspaer on Mercer Island.

No-- I think it was the reporter who conveyed what they were saying incorrectly.

I mean, obviously. A station GM isn't going to get their frequency wrong.

Also, as a former journalism student, it's fun to see this paragraph:

Former MIHS student Arvid Hokanson, who now works for the public radio stations 94.9 KUOW, at the University of Washington, said its rare for a high school to have its own radio station. Especially so high up on the bandwidth at 104.5.

...followed up by this paragraph...

``It's rare that there's a noncommercial education station in the commercial band,'' Hokanson said.

LOL!

exactly! It sounds like something happened-- too bad the article forgot to mention the point of the story!
______________

If you're not pleased with the responses - why not try being a Private Dick and investigate for yourself?

Ouch! Was willing to give them a ton of slack if it was either high school paper -- or even a community paper (like the one Issaquah has). But it's very frustrating to see that newspapers are letting accuracy go the same way electronic media is pretty much letting ALL news quality go. With electronics it's all basically the "news wheel" now -- about 10 topics that get repeated until each is replaced by a more timely topic that occupies the same slot. ANd we though MUSIC rotation was tight!

So if newspapers won't invest in enough people to get the real underlying story (I assume with Horvitz they have reporters doing as many stories as they can fit in a day and no luxury to take time to learn the underlying issues or background) and electronic has no "time" to devote to any stories --- am counting on Internet resources to start filling the void and getting some depth. Unfortunately, on 'net it's tough to build the $$ model because people aren't willing to pay (most content sites rely on ads not subscription $$ of any kind) so not likely they support any deep resources.

BIG DEAL ... you may say. But with no "watchdogs" then people like First .. will have no problems showing up in town and launching "Covington FM" at the cost of something that is probably more useful (educational station); or even worse, politicians begin to feel they can get away with whatever they want because no one is holding their feet to the fire. Still can't believe people are buying the "serving the people of Covington" angle on this move-in??!
