KMJ on 1160

I live in the Kingsburg and the other day I was sitting in a parking lot in Selma waiting for my wife.I started going up the am dial and came to 1160,it was loud and clear. So I waited for the top of the hour station id and to my surprise it was 580 KMJ.Now I know 1160is KSL out of SLC, a 50kw clear channel so what gives ?

Radio transmitters naturally generate signals on multiples of their intended frequency. 580*2=1160, 580*3=1740, 580*4=2320,..... These multiples are known as "harmonics". 580*2 is the 'second harmonic", 580*3 is the "third harmonic", etc...

These should be attenuated greatly by careful design of the transmitter and the circuits connecting it to the antenna. But the attenuation is finite, if you're VERY close to a powerful transmitter there may be enough harmonic signal to be received.

Also, sometimes harmonics are generated outside the transmitter. Bad connections can cause these. (a rusty fence near the towers?) They can even be generated in your receiver if the desired signal is strong enough.

I suspect the latter situation is what happened -- the main KMJ signal on 580 was so strong that your receiver went non-linear and generated a second-harmonic signal.

Once on 1620 I heard "Radio Red" in Monterrey, Mexico, from my home in FL. (2 x 810) I found out that they were only 500 watts on 810! That had to have been 20 years ago.

This topic got me thinking of a question I have had for a while regarding FM signals. I live in the area by the 41 and McKinley in Fresno. Whenever I try to tune KSOF 98.9 or KABX 97.5 to any radio in my apartment, I always hear signal bleeding in from Ostlund's KJWL 99.3. I don't have this problem with either KMJ-FM 105.9 or KHIT 107.1 when I tune them in. Is there some connection between trying to pick up a weaker station and the nearest FM transmitting facility bleeding in no matter what frequency your reciever is on? Also, I thought that KSOF was pretty powerful for an FM, I can pick it up all the way from Lost Hills to Los Banos/Santa Nella when I am on I-5.

I don't know how close you live to the freeway. But, maybe the signals are bouncing off the freeway. The freeway may have something to do with it? I'm just guessing.???

Could be a couple of factors, First of all KJWL has their tower on top of the former Del Webb building in Down Town Fresno with 16,000 watts and being that close it could be bleeding in. Back when 95.7, 101.1 and 97.9 had sticks in Down Town with 50,000 watts, when driving in Down Town it was hard to pick up anything other than those stations, you can here those 3 stations them thoughout the FM dial.

Second, the Freeway could be in the way of the KSOF and KABX signals depending where your house is, KMJ-FM and KHIT are directly North-East in the mountains and are much closer than KABX and KSOF.

I am between the 41 and the 168 south of McKinley, a couple of blocks west of Cedar. so I doubt the 41 is blocking the signals, but I am very close to downtown. The closest towers to me would technically be the KWRU 1300 (former KYNO) site.

When I make Deliveries in Downtown I can here the inference from KJWL
within a mile of their stick on other stations, I can here it on 104.1, but not on stations at Meadow lakes 105.9, 105.1, and 97.9 and KHIT 107.1 at Coarsegold, where you are at it really shouldn't be a problem, Depending on the Stereo, the antenna, and nearby Buildings.
