KMKS-Bay City Now 100,000

Effective last night around 8pm, Hot Country 102.5- KMKS in Bay city is now 100,000 watts. I am curious to see how far this pushes us into Houston. For those on the south and west sides of town in particular, please do me a favor and see if you are able to pick us up. On scan first, then fine tune.

Thanks!

The tower is next on the agenda, but that will be a bit longer.

I dont expect home penetration in Houston, however, I know we are now pentrating offices in Rosenberg, and we have gotten a few calls from the Friedswood are saying we are coming in clear in their cars.

This is very exciting for a station that has been independently owned for 22 years!

I mean no disrespect but...the transmitter has less height and more wattage. Seems like it will only have a more solid signal within a similar listening area. The upgrade did not add any more "cities" to the coverage...maybe a few more cattle ranches. I think it's great for a 100kw signal to be owned by an individual. I wish lots of luck.

I forgot to add and my time to modify post has passed but...I believe the biggest accomplishment is by moving from class C2 to C1, the station will have better signal protection against co-channel and adjacent channel stations.

I live on the south west near Meyerland I can not get this station at all

Myerland is a bit far. Looks like It got us a better signal in the Rosenberg/Sugarland area, as well as in the North and eastern portions of Brazoria county... I'm happy with that.

I agree with Steven, The protection of a C1 is great!

Yeah, an independent broadcaster with a 100kw station out of Bay City. Pardon me for not getting excited, but the last 2 times THAT happened (KIOX & KMGJ), both stations that used to serve Wharton County were unceremoniously dumped to simulcast Houston stations, and now have absolutely nothing to do with serving their COL. Sorry to say, I expect to see ol' 102.5 end up that way within the next 5 years.

I, along with allot of the staff at 102.5 were at KIOX/KXGJ when that happened.

The difference is the Sandlins have owned KMKS for over 22 years, and have a vested intrest in the communities we seve. Sure you can say "money talks', but anyone who knows the Sandlins know they are geared different from other broadcasters.

I predict in 5 years they will still own it, and have the new tower built.

Well, it's live and it's local, and whether it can be heard that much better on the far southwest side of Houston now doesn't seem to be important. There's a lot to be said for what KMKS has been doing over the years. And Radio girl, if you want to get on here and brag about it going to 100,000 watts, I'd say that's just fine!

I wish you luck, Radiogirl. I am an alumn of the original KIOX in 1974. When I say original, I'm talking about the big 1270. I do want to come by and visit. I'd like to see your station. Bay City will always hold a special place in my heart. KIOX was the second radio station in my 35 years on the radio.

Thanks Chuck. I seemed to remember that you had roots in Matagorda County. Its’ such a shame what has happened to that station…..and that historic old building.

I think sometimes we forget how lucky we are to be in radio. With the changes in our industry in the last 30 years, I can see why many are calloused.

I still have my pride, passion and love for the industry. Sure it's small market radio, but it's fun as hell!

Yeah. The paychecks bounced, but I was on the air and thats all that mattered. Eventually, I would get my money. But, as the late Lefty Frizzell would sing, "Always Late...." I thought I was good! Thats what I got for thinking. It was a great place to start though. Although KTLW in Texas City was the 1st station I worked for, it was a part time job. ($1.15 an hour) KIOX was my 1st full time job. I was so happy to get $700 a month (when those checks didn't bounce).

Good for you Radio girl. What happened to the old building? Is it still standing? I was down that way about a month ago but took the bypass and didn't even think of the old place.

I listened to KIOX in the 50s - one of the more impressive small town stations I could pick up back then.

It still stands. A sad shell of what she used to be. No love has been given to her in 5 years. I wonder if the old lady ghost still roams the halls.........

Congrats to the folks at KMKS. It's always good to see a small, local company do well. There's not enough of them anymore.

Radio Girl, I wish you luck. If the plan is to stay locally owned and operated, then you've got my full support. I just worry when one of the signals from Wharton County upgrade, now. Seems like everyone recently has said the hell with the locals, let's run to Houston where the money is. That's why I worry about the upgrade to our local 94.1 here in Bellville/Brenham. When it goes to 50kw, it's going to completely target B/CS, and not Austin County like it has for years.

I would think 94.1 and 102.5 would have a difficult time "moving" into Houston with any reasonable amount of signal due to co-channel Beaumont area stations.

Steven, supposedly with KLTR's upgraded 50kw signal, they will reach well into Bryan/College Station, and a good portion of real estate in far Northwest Harris County. No, 94.1 won't have the signal to target Houston, but most definitely will focus their attention on College Station moreso in the near future than they do now. I think you may have misread my post. I never stated it would become a Houston move-in, but a B/CS targetted station.

Purpledevil, we are cut from the same cloth. I agree with you.

We are pleased as punch to be able to better serve our "region". From Ft. Bend and Brazoria county, down toward Victoria county. We like being able to offer our listeners something the "big city guys" don’t. A local presence, involvement in our local festival and youth fairs, coverage of our local ballgames, etc. Exactly what Local radio should be. I was mostly interested to see how our upgrade effect our coverage in the Richmond/ Rosenberg and Lake Jackson/Angleton areas. We have had loyal listeners in those areas for years that have had to contend with only a fair signal. We really hope to see improvement in those areas.
