That list qualifies my previous two posts. There is a 'hole' in the market for a tradional sounding country format on a full market signal.

First Post on these Boards.. Have been a reader for Years!! Reason for not posting.. Hummm, fear.. Intimidation LOL.. Never the less the 2 Country stations in the Valley are quite Bland, repetitive and except for the talent, the same. Reason we started streaming Storm Country KQCX.COM.. Enjoy listening to it on my Blackberry on the commute into work, at work and back home ( When I'm not listening to KWSS of course ;D ) Anyhow I got my first post out of the way.. Wow that wasn't so bad.. Why did I wait years..

And just want to say this board is a daily check for me, and love the information and rumors and Lamptimer & Goldmine (AM and FM) posts. And to bad about Daves BBQ a while back.. Oh Well..

Without a full signal here in Phoenix 96.3 KSWG gets about 3/4 of the valley pretty good. Now Steve Wood "local guy" is doing mornings 5am to 9am. Heard him all last week and I think he mentioned another "local guy" will be doing afternoons soon. There goes the syndication. Here's the music I heard Friday at 6 AM...

Conway Twitty
Tracy Byrd
Blake Shelton
David Frizzell & Shelly West
George Jones
George Strait
Montgomery Gentry
Hank Williams Jr.
Asjton Shepard
John Anderson
Kenny Chesney
Kenny Rogers
Josh Turner
Oak Ridge Boys
Thompson Squared
Dave Dudley
Tanya Tucker

Didn't write the songs down, just the artists. Also heard 10 minutes of commercials, all Phoenix business except one from Wickenburg and one from Buckeye. Plus Steve talked with quite a few callers. KSWG will never compete with KNIX and KMLE but they do stream on 963realcountry.com and I listen at my desk. I remember having many of those RECORDS they play.

Wickenburg is their COL, oddly enough. (That's another reason 96~Three will always have signal trouble: 15 miles from Wickenburg is nowhere close to South Mountain.) I wonder if the Buckeye ad was for our own Media Hut?

Interesting feature in Friday's Inside Radio on the latest Albright & O'Malley study. In short: the artists who brought about Country's boom in the 1990's are headed out to pasture. There's a reason that Garth Brooks is playing Vegas and Brooks & Dunn split up: acts like them aren't cutting through to today's audience like Miranda Lambert, Zac Brown, Jason Aldean, and The Band Perry. There's more passion for new artists than older ones across all demos. No wonder you're starting to hear Garth & Toby Keith on some classic country stations.

It sounds like we're in for a new generation of young country, even if it's not being branded that way. Classic country still makes for a good rimshot signal or HD2 format, but don't expect that on a big station anytime soon. Texas Country/Americana still is stuck in the red dirt.

It's good reading, if you can get your hands on a copy. It will be interesting to see what artists really start to catch on over the next couple of years. (It also partially explains why some artists who I expected to sell out the rodeo where I live this year... didn't.)

With all due respect to Jaye Albright & Associates, I think there is a market for both sides of the spectrum when it comes to Country. I'm basing this on my own research. The young crowd loves Jason Aldean, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, and the newer crop of artists. HOWEVER... they also have a deep affection for Garth, Toby, Brooks & Dunn, Reba, and MERLE. Add into the texture of their fondness for OLDIES and CLASSIC ROCK and you can say that today's Country listener is a lot more different from past generations. They are open to a more varied approach.

Think of their influence. There's the internet and the ease of music access. That's all types of music in every genre. This is a generation that doesn't adhere to just one style. Check out their players. You will find out that one minute they are listening to Miranda Lambert and the next Steve Miller, followed by Beatles and Willie. It's a much different world

RADIO must make some adjustments. The industry MUST change and loosen up! That is why the HUMP needs to be different. Two Country stations going down the same path is a recipe for failure in the 21st century.

While yes, the jukebox at the Silver Dollar Saloon plays Freebird and David Allen Coe next to Jason Aldean, you won't grow the format playing that on the radio. Just sayin'.

Haven't been in a bar since 1995. My observations are based on dealing with families and special events. To get back to my original point, the two big Country signals in the Phoenix market are in the position of sounding almost alike and in most dayparts the same. My suggestion, (and nobody is going to do it) is for at least one of the outlets to be a little more traditional. There is a listenership available for both. The music format on KMLE HD2 is pretty good. It is just my OPINION that it MIGHT work on one of the main signals in Phoenix.

I think its people just are not listening to FM radio as much anymore.

I am all about podcasts now, or streaming to my phone a radio station.
