KMMX MIX 100 Changing formats?

Hey guys. Just heard a commercial on the radio stating that they are taking feedback from listeners about what they like about Mix 100 and what they don't like about Mix 100.

More importantly, it said changes are coming September 4th......

Maybe they are going to drop the "MIX" name and "officially" go CHR to compete against Kiss better?

Also on their twitter stating "big changes are coming"

http://twitter.com/Mix100

"The past month, we've been asking around Lubbock what kind of music you want to hear on Mix 100. Get ready for some big changes, and more hi"

unfortunately, their tweet is cut off in the middle of the second sentence...

With a drop from 5.6 in '09 to a 4.1 share this past Spring, SOMETHING might need to change at KMMX.

Of course with that logic ALL of Wilks may need some sort of change with the beating they took this past Spring...

I picked up the station in California via E-skip in July, I thought they were AC.
yes, it is. But over the years, it has shifted more towards CHR in my opinion. Will they drop the "Mix" name and pick a name more appropriate for CHR (such as Hot 100, B100, Q100, etc.) and tweak the playlist a bit or will they do something else (almost similar to when Z102 turned into Kiss FM)? Who knows.

But it's clear that this is in response to the "Lubbock shakeup" where GAP beat them out pretty badly.

A question.... and possibly an opportunity for me to learn something... but does a NAME or a name change REALLY matter? Cause... I have never heard anyone say "You know, I really hate that station because of the NAME!" If they had a different NAME... I would really dig them."

With that being said... if they were to change the name... I say go for something like 100X! YEAAAAAAH! Or something OTHER then HOT or the generic TOP 40 title. Don't just flip the page in your "So you wanna run a TOP 40 station" handbook. If you are going to change... if you are going to go through all of that... then do it up right.

However, what do I know...

I agree with you on that one. Simply changing the name isn't enough because people care more about the sound than the name. When Z102 became Kiss, it was like the same old Z102 except with Kiss FM bumpers for awhile and it sounded TERRIBLE.

I know, right?
Its hard to get emotional over a station named "Mix."
At least the word "KISS" has some ambiguity to it. But I mean c'mon.. "HOT," "WILD" "MIX" Why must radio stations feel the need to "spell out" the format to the listener?

For me... a label or name like 100X or X100 is more of a neutral name as well as cool. What I mean by that is... it doesn't confine the station. It doesn't place a label on it. Which for me... seems to be a better way to approach the whole change. I guess I simply see it as a chance to think outside the box... take advantage of the opportunity. Let's say I just moved from Dallas or some larger city and I am jumping around the dial and I come across MIX 100, and not being a fan of the MIX station where I used to live, I simply pass the station up and not give it a chance. However, if it wasn't branded with such a generic over used name... I might have taken a moment to check it out and there is a chance that I might have enjoyed it. However, I would never know... because I was automatically turned off... because of the over used generic label.

Thinking outside the box... also gives them or any station the opportunity to stand out which is something that is desperately needed in today's economical climate. As well as standing out in today's market of many different choices when it comes to listening to music i.e., Pandora etc...

Here's the scoop: Mix 100 will become "100.3 The Beat" and 104.9 will go all sports and start simulcasing Fox Sports Net.

Just kidding...
What I REALLY think will happen, is that Mix 100 will remain a Hot AC but will start playing more "Hits of the 90s" since that is what Stars has been capitalizing on. They may (underline, quote, parenthehsis) freshin up the name to "My 100.3, My Music, My Station" since that's a popular new buzz term and Stars has run a promo that basically implies that image.

I don't think there will be a drastic change, I think it will be a tweak, that's all. It may be just what is needed to get them to the next level.

Just my opinion.

No offense Garret, but that is the most ridiculous observation I've seen. I can understand maybe a mix of some older stuff, but really? You've obviously not seen the numbers to see just how successful Starz has been with that format.

You're right, I haven't. My understanding, from talking to a certain individual (who shall go nameless) was that Stars was making inroads. I have no access to the actual numbers. Hey, I'm just a guy sitting in the peanut gallery.

If in fact "MY...." is a new buzz term... that is the most moronic and lazy thing I have ever heard. That would mean that their imaging would say something like "You're listening to MY MUSIC! 100.3!" I have heard the "MY..." thing used... but I have only heard it used with FOX TV stations in regards to their websites, MYFOXLUBBOCK.COM etc... they do that in many markets.

Yeah, and those are HUGE inroads!

Now hold on there! the "My" branding is not all that bad. Three stations that I know of use this...

"MY 106.1" Rhythmic AC WISX in Philadelphia
"MY 102.5" Hot AC WMYI in Charleston, SC
and "104.3 MY FM" Hot AC KBIG in Greater Los Angeles

All three stations are doing fairly well.

How about this for a shakeup. What if Mix goes completely 80's & 90's? It would help their female numbers and probably get away from the tweens who want Katy Perry over and over and over again. It would put them up against stars more and Kiss less.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a horrible idea. I'm just trying to figure out what they'd do. I haven't seen any demos because I'm on the outside looking in, but I've read in many places Kidd Kraddick still kills in the morning, especially with women. I can't see a scenario where Mix would give him up. So short of an outright format change, I assume we all agree it will only be a format tweak. They're hurting trying to be a CHR station, so I think, and I'm sure I'll stand corrected, they will tone back the techno pop of today and lean back to the AC they used to play in the early 2000s.

Agree/Disagree?

They will become "Lubbocks Pop, AND HIP HOP ". They've already added the URBAN tracks. Yeah it's a lame move, just like the whole overdone "we asked you what you wanted..." promos to make people think they've actually consulted their audience. I swear to God if anyone at Wilkes Media ever has an original idea the world will explode.

Ya know, I've been listening and I haven't heard a single promo about any changes on Mix, and they are doing their Labor Day Blood drive. So I'm kinda unsure where this whole idea is coming from?
