The late Lloyd Moss (WQXR) was, without question, a personality. My classical listening has been limited over the years, but I will say that CapRadio classical here in Sacramento goes way beyond the “announcer” type. Mike Nelson, Jennifer Reason and Victor Forman exhibit more personality than I hear on most commercial pop music stations.
Neither is capable of generating revenue. It's sort of like trying to decide if you want a stroke or a heart attack. That was better than the 0.1 he's getting now.
No. But is why he said he was going classical this time.WEll, theres that too... but clearly digital hasnt always been a thought in the past.
I've said this before on another thread... Saul built and put his beloved KBCA 105.1 on the air in 1959 as a classical FM station. It didn't work at that time because Classical fans were glued to KFAC 1330, so he went to jazz. Jazz was very trendy in the 50's and 60's and having that format broadcast on a full power Mt. Wilson station was a dream come true. His station was very successful. If all it is is that he just likes classical music, then he could just listen to the much-better-sounding KUSC. Why put in so much effort to put it on his own station, with all that that entails? So it has got to be something more than that.
Like Michael said above, everything he puts on the station is going to be subsidized by KKGO. My guess is he feels classical is what needs to be subsidized the least. In fairness to him, he has tried most everything else.
I'd temper that to say that the station was "moderately" or "adequately" successful. It never was a top biller, but it was run very economically and was fine for a sole proprietorship.I've said this before on another thread... He has survived in shark-filled waters by doing formats nobody else wanted. The station was, whatever the format du jour, adequate but not outstanding. The point I'm leading to is that Saul has always wanted to own and operate his own Classical music station, and he's got it on digital AM 1260 and FM at 105.1 HD-2. It's simply his toy...for the life of me I don't understand why folks want to criticize him. He's having fun with an honest to goodness grownup toy. When we were very young many of us fantasized about this business with a "Mr Microphone" or some other Part 15 device trying to to broadcast to our neighborhood, and of course we later went on to work in the industry in one capacity or the other. But for the past 70 years Mr. Levine has been "livin' the dream!" who the heck are we to criticize?
This is more like mashed potatoes than cake.He has his cake and eats it too!
Me too! In fact, given the choice, I would take a plate of mashed potatoes over cake anyday! This is more like mashed potatoes than cake.
I LOVE mashed potatoes!
You can’t judge everything by billing David, sometimes a station can be poor in $$ and still be cakeI'd temper that to say that the station was "moderately" or "adequately" successful. It never was a top biller, but it was run very economically and was fine for a sole proprietorship.

Obviously, unless we are at the top of the food chain at a particular broadcaster, we don't know the bottom line profit or loss of stations and clusters. We can look at more widely circulated billing estimates, but even those have issues determining the revenue of individual cluster stations. You can’t judge everything by billing David, sometimes a station can be poor in $$ and still be cake
Yes...Is KMZT airing college football on Saturday nights?
I'm not sure what the revenue would be. Who's going to pay how much for clearance on an AM at 1260 on the dial plus an FM HD2? Usually the station has to pay the team or university a rights fee and then sells advertising to offset that---but who's gonna buy time?OK, that's a first...play-by-play sports on a Classical music station. But it's one way to bring in a little revenue.
If very little to no revenue, another case of why bother. I have no idea which team or teams are aired. Maybe, it's a team Saul has a liking for.I'm not sure what the revenue would be. University of California. (Note: URL contains "2007" so this may be outdated. But maybe Cal updates its network annually and lets the URL stay the same.)I'm not sure what the revenue would be. We have a winner. It may have to do with his association with several local universities.Maybe, it's a team Saul has a liking for.
If you like those, you may also like WCPE out of North Carolina. Great audio quality and processing (for a classical station) on their stream, and live hosts 24 hours a day. https://theclassicalstation.org/I happen to think that WFMT Chicago and WQXR New York are both better than KUSC
So a station in Los Angeles is carrying the UC Berkeley team. They and USC are the second-longest uninterrupted rivalry in college football, going back to 1933.University of California. My alma mater, Syracuse University, has a New York City-area affiliate in its radio network -- WNYM 970 Hackensack, which, like Cal's San Diego station, is a religious AM. SU has many, many alumni in the Tri-State area, some natives, others who got their degrees and found jobs in NYC.So a station in Los Angeles is carrying the UC Berkeley team. Wonder how many Cal fans there are down there?
And their San Diego affiliate is a religious AM in Tijuana.
