Funny story for you, Kyle.... I've been doing business for the last 7 years with Disney-owned (at the time) stations - KLOS, KABC, KDIS, and for the last 3+ years KSPN. We were thinking of dropping our business with KSPN (because of ever increasing rates) and replacing them with 1540 The Ticket, whom I approached in November. It looked like it was going to work... Then the rep I was about to work with left for a better offer.... His boss the LSM (who referred me to the rep) also left to take a position with a different LA station. NO ONE followed up with me even though they had my phone# and my e-mail. While that was going down, I worked out a compromise with KSPN and will maintain our business with them. Looking back even before I read the news about the proposed sale of KMPC, I felt fortunate that I didn't start anything with them. What a shame. But this experience speaks volumes, doesn't it?

Not surprising. According to a friend of mine who works at 1540 "The Ticket" they only have one salesman remaining. All the others left.

But from what he tells me, the sole reason for KMPC 1540's existence was so that the parent company, which has several stations with similar programming across the country as well as a publishing arm, could brag to their advertisers that they have an LA presence. Never mind the fact that the station has nearly 0 listeners or as my friend puts it, "the same seven listeners."

I guess, in the end, having bragging rights wasn't enough.

Not at all surprising. The writing's been on the wall since Sporting News Radio's very own New York O&O stopped carrying SNR and began leasing most of its airtime to programmers several months ago. KMPC is an also-ran in the ratings; only its college sports line up helps it out. Its miserable night-time signal (a giant 50,000 watt null) is deadly.

Is there a [fulltime] black gospel outlet in L.A.? Radio-Locator says KTYM is one...1460's website suggests mostly preaching, though.

Radio One as buys it as an affil for its new Syndication One talk shows, perhaps?
______________

Saul Levine, so he can play standards and/or oldies?

LA is less than 10% Black now, so niche Black formats are probably not viable.

The new "Garrett 1540 AM, LA's home for Late Breaking News and Modern Oldies..."

Just Kidding..
But if a radio station could be bought for $1. I'd be standing in line!

(BTW, I know this is off topic, but isn't "Late Breaking" really a bad thing? Shouldn't it be "Early" breaking? Just a thought...)

As I recall, it didn't do well as Spanish-language KSKQ either.
______________

Hey, just send the calls back to 710. ABC's keeping it as ESPN radio...but there's no real disadvantage to an hourly legal ID of "ESPN Radio 710...KMPC, Los Angeles". In fact, in the right voice, that could sound pretty good.

While you're at it, send them a decent signal too.

Never has 50,000 watts been so imposible to listen to. Can't even get the signal in Anaheim Stadium when they're broadcasting Angels games.

It did OK up till FM pretty much took over. Prior to 1992 when KLAX came on FM, they were ususally the #3 or 4 Spanish station, and after '92, as KXED, they averaged about a 1.8 to 2.0 for several years with oldies. By about 1995, they started dropping off the radar. Of course, the signal is good for Spanish as it does cover all the HDHAs daytime, and most at night.

Except that most home games are night games and in June and July they drop power at sunset 8 pm to 10,000 watts directional (away from Anaheim! haha)
In May and August they reduce at 7:45 pm, 7 pm in September, and 7:30 pm in April (DST)

True. Lack of significant nighttime coverage apparently was discussed among the staff as a cause for lower listener numbers.

It was also suggested that poor dial position is another factor. The thinking being that "The Ticket" would do better lower down the dial, say at 830, then where it is at 1540.

I'm not sure how valid that point is but it was mentioned.

WHY????

THEY HAVE 5100 LISTENERS PER QUARTER HOUR!

Are you asking WHY in the world would I even entertain doing business with them??
If that's your question, and it's a fair one, suffice it to say without going into details about my business.... Let's just say that my clients don't care about that, they care about how much $$$ it'll cost them.
KSPN was making it harder to maintain my prices and give the same service and The Ticket seemed like an acceptable alternative $$$-wise. But even I have some standards for my clients!

Hmmmmmm maybe Roger Nadel and Co. should be talking with Arte Moreno and move the format to 830 AM in preparation for obtaining the rights to Clippers games (now on 1150 KTLK really a fish out of water) and the Mighty (ooops not for long) the Anaheim Ducks games (now on a SAN DIEGO/Mexico station) and of course eventually the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim games. Tony Bruno would sound good on a better signal, Fred Roggin and Dave Smith, too. Of course they'd still carry USC Trojans football and basketball.
