KMSB expands 9PM newscast to one hour

KMSB/Fox 11's 9PM news will now go from 30 minutes to an hour seven days a week. The anchor on tonight's newscast made the announcement at the end of the news.

Also worth mentioning, weather is no longer being done by KTVK talent. I believe that makes the newscast now completely self-contained to Tucson. KMSB's entertainment/lifestyle correspondent Gina Trunzo has added weeknight weather anchor to her list of duties. They also have a meteorologist, Diana Stovern, that recently debuted for the weekend newscasts. Not sure if they're going to keep Gina on weekdays and Diana on weekends, or if weather duties are going to be similar to the sports department where it's not as straightforward. Brandon Nash usually does sports on Monday, Tuesday, and Saturday while Vinnie Vinzetta handles sports on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday. What a wacky schedule!

The quality of the on-air presentation is still the same. Still plenty of dropped audio, missed cues, and other problems that can plague a newscast. The set looks even more cramped now that there are three people (news anchor, weather gal, and sports guy) standing there at the end of the newscast.

But I still have to hand it to KMSB for putting on a newscast using a commercial production team (not initially trained for live news) and on a shoestring budget. They've come quite a ways, but still have a long way to go. I can't see it being a stand alone newscast anytime soon. They still heavily rely on video from KVOA for other local stories that KMSB reporters themselves don't cover.

Belo needs to see that the newscast has potential and needs to invest some money into it!!

Ditto, but because it's owned by Belo(w), I don't see it happening soon if I was a betting man, sadly. :(

Ch 11 is a Tucson station. Why did this wind up in the Phoenix board? Because of the Belo tie-in?

We cheat and use the Phoenix board for all Arizona stations. IMO, the Phoenix board should actually be called Arizona TV, but management doesn't really want to put much effort onto the TV side, so it's not worth asking for a change.

I love your tagline! :D

Also, KMSB still has a tie to Phoenix because they do simulcast GMAZ down there. KTVK used to produce KMSB's entire newscast in Phoenix and, more recently, the news and weather portions of the newscast. That's why we're discussing it here.
