KMTT

I too, would like to bid a fond farewell to Chris Mays. She made the Mountain into a very special station back in the mid 1990s (after being born from a Beautiful Music station!)

I used to listen to the Mountain almost exclusively from about 1994-2001, but then the station began taking itself too seriously, and became far too pretentious, forgetting the third A in AAA is "Alternative." Alternative doesn't mean, to me, the newest music on the block (whether it's any good or not), but some of the deeper tracks from Neil Young, Joe Jackson, Pink Floyd, Echo and the Bunnymen, U2. Some of this gets played on the Friday Night Flashback, but it is not nearly enough. The daily playlist is flooded with too much mainstream music from the 90's -- too much John Mellencamp, too much Sheryl Crow, too much "lesbian angst music" (which could be a format unto itself!)

I have found a new home with XM's The Loft -- available on AOL and on WinAmp. It's a much more pleasing mix, without the snootiness of John Fisher and the boredom of Shawn Stewart (oh yeah, and no ads).

One guy's opinion....

Interesting you describe Fisher as snooty...I've often thought that about him too. Almost like the "liberal elite media" attitude on a music station.

Well, the fact is most AAA fans are pretty lefty/progressive anyway. You'll hear that on any format that plays Rufus Wainwright.

The KMTT listener isn't as wildly adventurous as the KEXP and KAOS listeners. It's a station for those folks who are too young for Elvis, too old for Kanye West, too irritated by Cannibal Corpse, too embarrassed by Toby Keith, but too hip for Faith Hill's latest AC schmaltz.

KEXP will play Metallica if you ask them politely (chipping in a $20 can help get things moving.) KMTT jocks would probably faint at the mere hint of Metallica in their playlist.

But on the other hand, there is a "conservative elite media" attitude and I hate to break this to everybody but it's in most commercial radio today (short playlists, strictly limited jock input, tight internal pecking orders, etc.) And it's just as annoying to some listeners as KMTT and KEXP are to others

With Chris Mays departure, I think KMTT could use this time to experiment a little. KMTT can be a little stuffy sounding sometimes, But I've listened to John Fisher off and on and I don't think he sounds snooty (and I have heard some uber-snooty jocks on the radio.) Maybe pretty educated, but not deliberately snooty. WSU/Northwest Public Radio is as snooty sounding as the radio can possibly get in my opinion.

Anyone but me ever notice how many times Shawn Stewart lets everyone know that she is the Program Director when she is doing her time slot? Last time I listened it was three times.

Git a rope....(just kiddin')

Actually, that's a good thing that SOMEONE is publicly claiming responsibility for the content of their station.
