I dunno...I listened to MOViN in the car for about a half hour earlier this week. Other than one Leona Lewis song I recognized as new, all the music was the regular MOViN hodge-podge of "old school" soul, dance, and lite-rap from the last 3 1/2 decades. To me, "contemporary hits" stations should play at least 50 percent new music to justify using that label.
Star 101.3, and even Alice play more current music than that.
In my day (Yes - the stone age 60s, 70s, and 80s), Top 40 stations played about 75% current hits during drive time - 3 new songs in a row, followed by a re-current or Oldie. During other hours and on weekends, they would often switch to 50% - playing one new hit, then a recurrent or Oldie.
I suspect that stations classify themselves as CHR or AC to gain some demographic advantage, even though they play primarily non-current music. For example, I notice that KBLX and KISQ both have the label "urban AC" even though their playlist is overwhelmingingly "old school."
