McCrea calls KMXD not going all Christmas a "strategic decision" and wanted more time to evaluate the impact of KMXD's 80's and 90's pop. Well, the generic 12+ ratings aren't very encouraging and without knowing how the dayparts & demographics break out, i'm sure those are disappointing as well.

Will CC finally put the Mix/My format out of it's misery in 2006? Would CC's "brew" format make an appearance in Des Moines? How about a clone of CC's US 93.3 that is in Omaha?

Yeah, from reading his comments and knowing how KMXD has traditionally done ratings wise, it wouldn't surprise me if CC flips KMXD in '06. I don't think KMXD is in the tank sales wise, but I know it definately doesn't do as hot as they would like for it to do.

That comes from me working with CC for a few years.

They could go for a 'brew' type format, or they could do something talk oriented with WHO on the FM.

I don't think a 'US' type format would be feasable as it would erode the country sales numbers even more in a growing urban market. And, I don't think classic country is gaining too many more listeners as the years go by.

Here's just a thought. What if CC took KISS and put it on 100.3, and then flipped 107-5 to a 'Modern Hit Music'(Rock-CHR/pop) type format similar to Q98.5 in Omaha???

The logic...
That would create direct competition for STAR by creating a fresh perception in people's minds by actually moving the formats to different frequencies, particularly in the case of KMXD. If CC kept the 'Modern Hit Music' format on KMXD, it might only sound like another tweak. But, if they swapped them altogeather, they could create a fresh perception which could drum up more listeners, as well around half of the state getting a new, strong, stable CHR signal.

One other thing...

I know this sounds nit-picky here, and I apologise to Joel or any other CC person reading this, but some of My100's liners are really CHEESY and hokey sounding.

Not the jingles, but the voice image liners saying things like...

"Through the bridges and the corn"

Or talking about "From our big tall tower in the middle of a corn field"

"My100 is comin on strong!!!"

Way, Way too overdone and hokey. My fiance and I actually laughed at a couple of them cause their just so weird sounding. Even she, who doesn't know much about radio thought it sounded really goofy.
 
It must be nice to get those corporate lush discounts on the streaming royalties (and I'm not talking about commercial content - I mean the music licensing that comes out to about 5 grand a year for a normal music station). 98.7 KMGO was the first in the midwest 10 years ago to start streaming our signal, and we had to kill it a few years back (like everybody else) thanks to the folks in congress... :) Now if that was the only thing I had to gripe about all day...lol...

That is hokey. Even by Iowa standards. It must sound extra-hokey to people passing through central Iowa.

He should go back to selling. He thinks he knows programming because KOEL put him on the air every now and then.

I don't care what his rationale is, and I don't know the man, but God bless him for not airing Christmas music from July 4th to Christmas like a lot of these other losers are doing.

I have to agree with that!!!!!!!!!

Another idea with what could be done is to move KCCQ's format to Des Moines...not neccessarily on 100.3. They could swap frequency's around perhaps!? Just a thought...I know it would be hard to fill 105.1 with something new, though.

Excellent Idea!!!!!!
Then, they could put a format similar to MY100 on Q or do some other AC type format to serve N. Central Iowa. (Ames, Boone, Web City. M-town, etc.)

I've had the pleasure of working with Joel at 2 stations, KOEL and KWLO. He is a quality individual and knows the business...all aspects. While being on-air doesn't make someone a programmer, as I'm sure you know, being in the business as long as Joel has gives him the knowledge and experience to draw on to make choices. Whether you agree with them or not, don't belittle someone who may have a primary background in sales. After all, without sales, we'd all be out of work!

Good for you. He's still in over his head. Someone elevated to a job beyond their capabilities is what "in over your head" means. Considering the lack of success all of the CC stations except WHO have had supports the point. And a trained squirrel can run WHO until all of the WWII generation dies off.

And yes, you do have to have significant on-air experience if you're going to make programming decisions. By that rationale, you don't have to hit the streets trying to make your goal in order to makes sales decisions.

KMXD is dying...

wait, it's already dead. The production is horrid. The liners and prod is dated, actually sounds like they're purposely trying to make it sound bad, and the jocks are pitiful. The morning show is absolutely dreadful with those people. I won't even honor them by naming them. Bob has to have the biggest target on his back right now.

The situation at that station is hopeless. They might as well turn the lights off and leave.

That would be news to the many male executives at P&G who very successfully work on the branding and marketing of feminine hygiene products...

IMO only, Bob Lawrence has the worst radio voice of anyone that's even been in this town for the last 20 years. That makes me tend to switch over the station during the afternoon. When Randy Sierra fills in, I tend to stay. Maybe others do the same?

I tend to never listen, what a poorly programmed and poorly executed station.
