KMYZ flipping to CHR?

Just heard this one. Apparently after several years of declining sales and suffering from an obvious idently crisis, KMYZ is going to make the leap and give KHTT a run for its money.

I wish them luck. (Good luck!!)

I wonder if any of the staff will make the cut? It will be interesting have two clusters in town with an ACish station and a CHR.

Tulsa just got more interesting!

If that is true, I guess they could just go back to being Z-104.5 and drop "the edge".

I can see it now...

Bring back Banana and Mel...Wavy Davy...Elvis Polo...

The Hot New Z...Tulsa's 10 in a row station.

Ok...never mind...I believe all of these jocks are otherwise happily engaged elsewhere at the moment.

They dropped "The Edge" moniker several weeks ago.

Man, you brought some memories on that:) I remember when KMYZ was a Classic Rock station back in the mid 80's.

If KMYZ goes back to CHR, it would be a 3-way CHR battle between K-Hits which leans heavily Rhythmic with it's Pop CHR format, and KTBT-The Beat with it's Rhythmic CHR format. Who will survive the race in this battle? Would another station in Tulsa pick up the Alternative format if this change happens?

I would LOVE for them to go back to being The Hot New Z104.5! That station just rocked! What a hell of a staff they had back then too! Hmm.. That would be too cool. Nope.. not gonna happen. LOL!

In the current economic climate, I can't see Shamrock giving up format exclusivity to become the third CHR in the market. In the best of times, CHR is a tough sell. Today, with two existing competitors in the market? Just don't see it.

Besides, KMYZ's nearest competitor just went away. Why would you change formats before you see what the effect of that is?

The smartest thing they could do would be to kidnap Paul Kriegler, lock him in a room and only feed him when he programs.

Oh, those were the days! I listened to Tulsa's 10 in a row station all the time when I was in high school in Fayetteville, AR. But where are Banana and Mel these days?

I have no clue where Banana Bradley is today. Mel Myers is still doing mornings at Classic Rock/KJSR Star 103.3 in Tulsa. I believe Wavy Davy is still doing nights at Star 103.3, and I've heard Elvis Polo on Saturday mornings on Talk Radio KFAQ. I believe former Z-104.5 evening jock Hondo is now deceased.

Who else?

Oh yeah, Randy Young works for Shamrock, doing imaging for Z-104.5 and afternoons on KTSO.

Banana Brad Farnsworth is now a youth pastor at Family Church.

Wavy just gotted upped to afternoons on Star 103 and is the head of Creative Services at Cox Tulsa

I heard that Hondo got a big gig out in Phoenix in the early '90s. I guess he went out there and sadly...died in a drug related situation.

I didn't know Randy young was the guy on afternoons for KTSO. I think someone on this board recently posted some airchecks of Randy doing a weekend show on the Z in 1990 or so.

Wow! You guys are making me feel old. Good times! I used to listen to these guys when I was in Jr. High. Now I have been doing the radio thing for 16 years! I worked with Elvis Polo a few years ago & I told him I used to listen to him when I was a kid. These guys have been in the market for years!!!

I worked briefly with Mel over at Cox. When I met him, I told him that I used to listen to him when I was a kid and he gave me this look of appreciation mixed with Horror.

Interesting combo.

I owe my whole radio dreams to two daily / weekend listening habits:

#1: Waking up to "Mel and Banana" in the morning on Z 104.5 (with the pink Z logo)! There was nothing I looked forward to more each morning then to listen to the "Birthday Wake Up Call" that they did!

#2: Staying up late on Sunday nights and listening to "Smokehouse Blues" on KMOD with John Henry.

Good to hear that TRUE radio talents still are welcome on the Tulsa airwaves! Too bad John is gone.

I got the same look from him too. I did part-time there too & said the exact same thing to him. He's gotta love us! At least I didn't tell Cindy (from KBEZ) I used to watch her on TV in Joplin when I was a kid. :) It's one thing to tell a guy that, but man...to tell a woman that!!! :O

I remember listening to Z104.5 after school when I was driving home in High School. I remember hearing a dj say, "It's 3 o'clock & I'm your jock!" I though that was so cool...but now...there's no way I would say that. And I am sure that guy wouldn't say it now either! :)

I also listened to Jan Dean at night on Khits with Carly Rush on after Midnight. I was in Jr. High then!!! I recall she would let listeners call & say goodnight to their friends, but I forget what the feature was called.

I DID tell her that. I used to watch her on TV up there when I would visit my granparents in the 80's.

She said: "Let me get this right...you were s@#*ing your diapers while I was doing TV in Joplin?

I laughed so hard I about pooped my diapers again. She's FUNNY in person.

Z104.5 audio here.....

ftp://olsen.sytes.net/pub/airchecks/z1045/

Z104.5 was certainly one of the last of the great stations out there. I just wished I had the airchecking technology of today so I could have recorded volumes of of the Z to hard drives, etc. while it was still going strong. Thank you Mel, Bananna, Wavvy, Hondo (RIP), Randy, Elvis Polo, and the other Z-Js from back then. You guys just rocked!
