I think they have carved a decent niche in the market. The "station formerly known as The Edge" is not dying, just evolving. It has held this format for one way or another for over 10 years. In this environment that constitiutes a "heritage". It is, however, beginning to sound rather "nostalgic", playing to virtually the same audience it had in the mid 90's, BUT remember that the listeners it retained now are in their early 30's and have more buying power. Go ahead and put that old Screaming Trees and Cake in hot rotation and keep cashing those checks. That demographic is still interested in new music, too. Why muck around with something that is not broken? Let it evolve.

Hard to say. Remember, the book hasn't been released yet, and you usually don't see changes until the book comes out. I could see a format change happening at KMYZ simply because alternative has virtually no new or up and coming product right now, and the station has been steadily losing listeners, much like almost every alternative station nationwide. A DISCOURSE FROM AN ORPHANED 80'S GEN-XER
I was the Edge's target demographic when they made the flip to alternative at the close of the video music era. I graduated high school in the early 90's.
But for some reason I never really enjoyed alternative music. I remember as an 18 or 19 year old looking at the Edge's flip and thinking "man, that sucks."
All of my friends were going ga-ga over Green Day and Nirvana. I was standing on the sidelines in my Aerosmith T-shirt wishing that Def Leppard and Motley Crue were still cool. I remember thinking..."this music is aweful. Why do they like this alternative crap?" I even worked on air for the EOI team for awhile. But I just never got it. I don't know...maybe I wasn't an angry enough teen.
Maybe I was born too late. Instead of being born in '75 maybe I should have been born in '69 or '70. My favorite era is still the '80s and early '90s. Needless to say, Scott Shannon, Joe Cortez and Kidd Kelly are the big brothers I never had.
I'm on the cusp of 31 years old now. Am I the only one of this age group that missed the bus I was supposed to want to take in the '90s with alternative?
I'm just glad it's coming to an end.

No, Gary, you're not the only one. I was two years removed from Tulsa when Z-104.5 flipped to the Edge, and, by that time, I was off the alternative bandwagon. I actually kinda liked the format, though I was one of those listeners who frequently sampled but very seldomly stayed, in the very early-90's when it was on KDGE 94.5 and KTOW 1340/102.3 as well as its predecessor the "Progressive" format in the 80's (and 70's for that matter) as you were never sure just exactly what was coming next and many of the individual songs were so off-the-wall you just couldn't help but enjoy listening. However, alternative somehow became mainstream and gave way to "new rock," and that unpredictability and variety went bye-bye. I didn't listen much to alternative by that point.

Word on the street is Sean Phillips will flip the format soon. It will be introduced as "Z-Hits". He'll ask eveyone to "listen... thank you!"
He'll voice most of the imaging himself. Put Andy Barber in the mornings, Robbie Cruz in the midday, himself in the afternoon and Dave Dallow at night!.
Just thought I'd add to the crazy comments already posted about 104.5 flipping. From the outside looking in, 104.5 needs time to see how 102.3's flip to Christian AC will effect the market. To me if there was going to be a flip it would be 104.5's sister station!
By the way... surely Pat Bryson is up for the GM position there!

Barber would be crazy to leave his current situation at Cox...even for mornings at Shamrock. =)
When you're talking companies with a track record of longer career runs...you're talking more Cox than Shamrock.
But then again...Barber is a morning guy by nature. But my money is on Barber staying settled at Star. He sounds great on middays, has management that respects his track record and resume and is probably doing alright money-wise.
My prediction...if anyone in the market ever went to A.B. to try to steal him from Cox...they'd be hard pressed to get him. I think he likes Tulsa and wants to retire here. The best way for him to do that is to stay in one place. And I think he's a smart guy who knows that.
