KMZK Country?

Hey Guys:

Was KMZK Country before they went Classical KONC in 1986? How many years were they country?

Thanks

T.J.

I'm not sure how many years they were country, but it was KMZK before it picked up the calls, format, and music library of KONC when 101.5 flipped to "Format 41" as KAMJ.

Between the spotty signal from Shaw Butte and the adjacent channel interference of 106.5 out of Arizona City, listening to KONCert 106 was pretty rough. Even after they bought 106.5 and simulcast on it, reception was pretty crappy.

If I recall correctly, the signal out of Arizona City was on the same frequency as the main Sun City signal on 106.3. The reception was definitely horrible and hard to pick up in Tempe and most of the East Valley.

Arizona City has always been at 106.5. But yes, getting 106.3 in Tempe/Mesa was tough.

While some of the FCC's stuff online only goes back to 1996, it appears that Jay Brentlinger had the 106.5 for awhile as KBZR and made some changes to the signal in the late 90's before it passed to Big City Radio and then Univision. That might explain why it doesn't step on 106.3 as much today.

Also, the call sign records show that 106.5 had the calls KMZR before KONZ. I wonder if it simulcast KMZK before the classical flip?

I worked at KMZK for the final 6 months before they became KONC. KMZK was country from 2004-2006. About 18 months in all I believe. When I was there Jon Town was the PD. Bobby Butler, Jim O'Neal, Tim Higgins and I (Mike Lee) were on-air staff. Jon did middays.

Mazursky decided to chase the 1 share KONC left behind. One thing I'll say, even though KNIX was king, when KMZK worked a nght club like Mr. Lucky's or we did remotes in the west Valley a good crowd showed up.

I got to fill-in on afternoons quite a bit for Jim O'Neal and enjoyed getting to know Jim Spero who was doing afternoons on K-Life at the time. Some really good memories from that time period.
