KNBC to have 60th anniversary special in January

I know that Chime mentioned this briefly in another thread (Final Night Retrospective), but Channel 4 will have a 60th anniversary special on January 16th at 7pm. I saw a promo for it during the Football Night in America pregame show, featuring Tom Brokaw (who worked at Channel 4 in the '60s and '70s before moving to the NBC network fulltime). In all my time living in this area, I could never remember Channel 4 celebrating any milestone anniversaries. I do remember them doing a small retrospective on the history of the news department on the night of the NBC 75th anniversary special in '02.

Three another upcoming Los Angeles station milestone anniversaries in '09

KTTV: turns 60 on January 1st (they didn't do a 60th anniversary tribute for KCOP back in September, and I don't expect Fox to anything for 11)
KABC: turns 60 on September 16th (I could see doing some sort of tribute, but I'm not holding my breath)
KCET: turns 45 on September 28th (outside of some promos, I'm not expecting much from them)

You're right. Channel 4, as venerable as it may be, really didn't break a lot of ground or make much in the way of broadcast history. Hopefully, their anniversary special won't turn into "The Kelly Lange Show", much as Channel 2's 40th anniversary special in 1988 deteriorated into "The Geraldo Rivera(!) Show". I also hope that they don't try to claim falsely that Lange was the first female anchorwoman in L.A. She wasn't even second or third.

I remember when KCET started in 1964. In 45 years, I've learned not to expect much from them.

Who was the first female anchor in LA? I remember Rush Ashton (later ...Taylor) anchoring a short (15 minutes or a half-hour) Saturday broadcast around noon on KNXT right after the morning CBS cartoon and kids-show block of programs...that's why I was watching. So that must have been the early 1960s.

I am curious, has any of these stations ever celebrated their anniversaries in the past, Like did KTTV celebrate their 50TH or 40Th or how about their 25TH Anniversary. Same goes for the other stations like KCOP and KABC. Did they celebrate their other Anniversaries in the past?

KCOP had a 50th anniversary special in 1998, and other than KTLA celebrating its anniversaries every 5-10 years, and Univision's KMEX celebrating its 45th in '07, no other station in the market hasn't done as much. KCBS last did an anniversary special (#40) in 1988, and KTTV did a tribute special when they moved from Metromedia Square/Fox Television Center to their current home in '96.

If anyone should do some boasting and back-patting, as far as honoring their history, is KABC. They've been a pretty dominant station (especially in news) for over the last 30 years, but I like I've mentioned before...I wouldn't be terribly surprised if Channel 7 doesn't do an anniversary special...maybe some promos, but not all-out like KTLA did and what KNBC is doing.

I just finished watching the show on my DVR. WTF happened to Kelly Lange's face??? Can you say botox or collagen overload? I knew you could.

When they were talking about african-american reporters, who was the black female news anchor with the afro circa the early 1980's? Anybody know?
