KNBR finally!

Finally caught an ID from KNBR San Fransisco a few minutes ago during sunrise skip despite heavy static on the band. It's not the best reception but I'm very happy to check this one off my list! Check it out:

Oh, and WSCR has their IBOC off too which really helped me out (hope they leave it off).
 
Woo-hoo!! Congrats on KNBR! I'll have to try for them now. My path to San Fransisco went right through Chicago and WSCR's IBOC hash. Should be easier now sans the IBOC.

I did hear sports on 680 one early morning last October, but it ended up being Memphis.

740 is a big problem in the midwest. Toronto is very strong. A phaser would be the best chance.

Perhaps that's a sign! I got my first log of the '11-'12 AM season last Sunday. WCEV 1450 from Cicero, IL. Granted it's no KNBR or KNX caliber catch, but the first log always gets me excited for what the rest of the season has in store.

Crain mentioned a few West Coast stations for us Midwesterners. I think my target list is exactly the same. I need KNBR, then i'll try for CKWX or CBU. Then possibly KCBS, which will be very difficult with Toronto on 740.

KCBS will be tough because they throw a big null in this direction. The only Bay area stations I've ever heard here in the Chicago area are KNBR & the ex-band station in Vallejo when they first went on.

The farthest west 680 I ever got was KKYX. Living in FL, I never gave a thought to trying for KNBR...

Nicely done, kilo. And encouraging to know we can still try for KNBR here east of the Mississippi and have a reasonable chance for success. I didn't realize WSCR has been keeping their noisemaker off. That sure should help.

If they (SCR) keep it off I'll try for KNBR soon. This is a good time of year to try to get the West Coast at midwest sunrise.
I used to find that mid to late October was the best time to hear KNX in the morning. I used to hear it on my car radio driving on the Kennedy
around 6:45--7AM in late Oct.

Yes, these have always been on my hit list and I'll keep trying for them. Some comments about these frequencies in the morning:

1130: Might be my best bet, but phasing out Milwaukee will also null other stations to the west, but if conditions are good I might catch CKWX under WISN.

740: Tough despite the phaser's ability to put CFZM right down to the noise floor, but then KRMG usually dominates along with WRPQ & WVLN (when they sign on in the morning).

690: When tuning the phaser to favor the west, it's usually KGGF coming in strong but CBKF is also common in the morning.

For anyone here in the midwest trying for KNBR, here's a tip that might help. If you notice two or more ESPN stations slightly out of sync, then there's a chance one of them could be KNBR. Stick with it until the top of the hour and hope for a fade-up during ID time, and have that recorder going :)
 
Aren't KCBS' & KGO's patterns basically north/south? That won't help.

CKWX I think can be possible in the Midwest/East, but I won't hear it.

KGO and KCBS are both nulled to the east and west. Even in Hawaii where there's no competion it's
Very hard to hear KCBS. I've never been able to hear KGO in Hawaii. I imagine it's just as difficult
To hear them in the Midwest.

Definitely possible in the Midwest. I heard it a few times last December and a couple of times after that. It was also roaring into Winnipeg when I was there last month. But Florida....that'd be a great catch!

I've often heard two ESPN stations on 680 making a slight echo effect and I hoped the weaker one was KNBR but it turned out to be from some place in the south.

What are the other stations besides KNBR on 680 that carry ESPN?

I've heard CKWX a few times here in the Nashville area. Easiest shot for the Pacific Northwest.

(I've got two other catches from there -- CBU 690 and KGA 1510, the latter before they went Class B, and I think they may have been operating non-DA at night at the time)

Anyone trying for anything on 690 or 940 in the East should be trying *now*. There's a move afoot to reactivate the frequencies in Montreal.
