KNBR Morning Show

I haven't been paying good attention lately ... how long has Paulie Mack been Brian Murphy's sidekick on the KNBR Morning Show?

The KNBR website has erased all references to the hosts on the morning show, and Murphy mentioned this morning that Tim Liotta is still with KNBR as its "Creative Director."

Wow! I used to really dislike Paulie Mack when he had a regular time slot. Does he still make pot references every 2 minutes?

I am going to guess that means things are not looking up for that show. I used to enjoy Brian Murphy as a writer. That has just not translated to the radio.

That also blows my suggestion for a possible future host for KNBR. If anyone reads Bill Simmons-The Sports Guy on ESPN.com, he seems like a perfect fit for the 12-3 slot. Lot's of sports knoweledge, but with plenty of pop culture thoughs too with a lot of contacts in the sports and entertainment industry. Perfect for between Radnich and Ralph/Tom. But I have never heard him speak and after listening to Murphy, I'm going to hold back on that suggestion.

Sports Radio Morning Show input

Here's a question, one that certainly ties into KNBR, which has struggled with a morning product for a long time.

Does a sports radio station need a sports radio morning show, or an entertaining comedy-pop culture driven morning show that has a solid cast of sports aficionados?

In more specific terms, should it be male-driven, say, a Maxim Magazine attitude, or perhaps a classic rock flavor, that focuses less on the female appeal pop culture (since we all know Raider fans love Oprah)?

If it's an entertainment-based product in more traditional morning show terms, how much more sports do you give credence to so it fits the station properly. I guess it's the difference between what John London did (or what Imus at WFAN in New York continues doing) versus what they just had. Can a balance be struck between the two that will satisfy the sports fan (who, admittedly, has fewer options than the music radio listener) and bring in male listeners who might otherwise listen to, say Lamont & Tonelli?

Who knows what Susquehanna will do with a sale looming but for now, it's a strictly hypothetical question for open discussion here. Thoughts?

I think the problem for a long time is that there is just no content there in the mornings. I know everyone complains about the # of commercials on KNBR, and I think that is not going to change. But with all the other stuff on the station in the morning (news, sports, traffic, money) it seems like it is just random Niner and Giant interviews and the hosts are just throw away with no personallity.

What about dumping the news and sports updates? If someone wants to hear news, they are probably not going to turn on KNBR in the first place. If there is a big sports story, I think they are going to be talking about it. But, there is not a lot of new, breaking sports news between 6:00-9:30 am. There is no reason to give me last nights Warrior score every half hour.

Brian Murphy has a higher voice. But, unless you count writting for the UCLA student newspaper, I don't think he counts as an ex-jock.

Or, are you talking about F.P. Santangelo (although I don't think his voice is high)? He has not been on in several months. He has a morning gig in Sacramento now.

DJ,

My bud, a KNBR listener, tells me It happened this week. BTW Liotta WAS the "Kreative Director" when he took over mornings after they Blew Out
London. Now based on what I've heard, It must have been a secret job, Cause It's never been creative.KNBR is the kind of place where assistants are
asked to read spots when they are done typing letters, Very Creative. And Very Cheap...

Cumulus Takes over, according to the trades, in April. Lee Hammer is the PD
for the moment and the word is Cumulus has already visited the Sports Leader.

KNBR is in real need of a house cleaning. The Giants will save them for a while, they always do. I'm sure Cumulus will enjoy the fact that the listeners
will be distracted for a while. But,I can't imagine much of that managment staff
surviving an Owenership Change.

With the exception of the games, the rest of KNBR's product is very mediocre.
Radnich is fun, but the rest of it is lame and unprofessional, I thought Sylvester the Cat had a show there, It turned out to be some guy named Barbiere.

Promos for Murphy & Mac are now being played during the rest of the day.

I would guess everyone there can feel safe till the Giants win it all or flame out this year since it turns to pretty much 24/7 Giants when pitchers and catchers report to spring training (minus, of course, Rick Barry breaking down some random NBA game from the night before.) It must be nice to have the six to seven month safety net of the Giants season there.

KNBR needs a major overhaul

Wishfull thinking i wish they would fire the entire staff and start anew.

Gary Radnich and his laughing shctick is terriable him and bruno make me hit the mute button. Typical knbr broken record personlaity with the constant refreence to the same stuff.

Rick Barry and Rod Brooks "dull and duller" how brooks remained so long with the station is hard to blieve he has a job so long. Proably due to being a minority.

And the worst for last Barbieri and Tolbert,Ralphie it takes me 10 minutes to ask a question and tries to act so hip and the Juvenile humour and antics of Tolbert uggggggggggghh and the constant sound effects they add make for terriable radio.

Wish ticket1050 would run espn or fox radio for listenable radio at least thank goodness they run the Drive at least you can get some info out of that one.

Wonder why they run the Espn radio orginated local sports news and then have somebody local due it at the bottom of hour.

Lets hope the new owners make major changes.

Suggestion get Ted Robinson and Have Greg Papa again have shows hosts who know what they are talking about and are informative without resorting to high school humour.
Edited by yodaroxs on 02/23/06 06:56 AM.

Sylvester the Cat? I think Dan Dibley fits that joke better...They must have to sand blast his mic after he's off the air.

Agreed, and let's not forget that they fired the man who IMO was the most interesting host on the station, Larry Krueger. At least the guy was a hard core Bay Area sports fan, and representative of the listener base during his time slot after Giants games....including their feelings about the team. When the Giants dropped 2 in a row to Colorado, I knew a rant was on the way, and I tuned in to hear it, and rant he did. He was the voice of the angry fan, and there were a lot of angry fans listening after that game.

He was also the lone voice of dissent on that station in a lackluster season. I don't mind the team's announcers being "homers" but if the team stinks, I want to hear it from the station's hosts after the broadcast is over. He made an unfortunate slip, two sentences in the middle of a 9 minute long rant, the rest of which was powerful and truthful. He did deserve to be discliplined, but not fired. However, Tony Salvadore the coward fired him to appease the Giants and Felipe Alou rather than protect his hosts. That had to have sent a bad message to the remaining employees: criticize teams we have deals with and you're outta here. Talk radio without truth and without dissent is boring. Since none of the hosts can feel confident that they will have support from management with INTEGRITY while he is still there, I am convinced the coward must leave. Then maybe they can get good hosts that will speak their minds, and they might even break into the Arbitron top 10 for the first time in...how long has it been again?

I haven't listened much since the Krueger fiasco. The hosts just aren't very good. Krueger was much better than Damon Bruce.

My sources tell me everyone will be shown the door. Adult Standards are coming to Magic 680.

Now that is total b.s. KNBR has problems, but billing is
not one of them.

I assumed the post was tongue in cheek. I really hope that it was tongue in cheek and he forgot to put a :) at the end. If not, it is one of the worst made up rumors of all time.

Yes, but the safety net won't last forever, I'm sure Cumulus will clean house.
They need to. What you are hearing is the collected 16 year run of Bob Agnew, there talentless/Fired PD, no wait he had one talent, kissing Tony's ass. Yes sir Mr. Tony sir. Then, Tony threw Agnew under the bus so he could keep his job.
"Way to Go Bobby"

Agnew once bragged to me he was a graduate of Career Academy of Broadcasting,
(one of those give us a grand $ and we'll tell you you're a DJ schools from the 70s)
I burst out laughing, he was serious. A talentless bully who keeps/Kept his job by saying yes to the sales dept all the time. Sales runs the station. The production there is a Joke too, My favorite guy is the Puker who always filters
his voice in spots, It is so preditable I just laff when I here it. "oh look
I have idea" But only one! Whats worse, he's in love with his voice. Check him out on the Carlsen Car Ad.

It's the low bid ALWAYS at KNBR. With a management staff thats afraid of any one with talent or ideas, because they have non. Plus it will make them look bad to the rest of the Talentless Staff.

I wish someone would drop a dime on them for all the movie stuff they lift.
Copywrite Laws anyone? But I'm sure they think stealing someone elses work
makes them creative...Add a Filtered Voice Over and WOW.

I have also had my run-ins with BA. I 'll never forget babysitting the overnights when he called in a drunken stupor trying to disguise himself as a listener and wanted to know the reason that the sports report didn't have the Sharks score in it. Slurred speech...5AM...I told him the Sharks lost 4 to 3 and he was more focused on why the score wasn't in the sports report. Something I did not have control over since they were all pre-recorded the night before. I finally said to the 'listener', "Bob, if you want the score, you need to tell your staff how to do sports updates." He hung up!
We could go on and on about the bottle between Tony and Bob (and yes that was meant to be bottle not battle)but let's be the better people and let them dig their own grave. They already have shovel in hand.

Re: KNBR needs a major overhaul

Regarding the Morning Show, the top rated a.m. show in the major demos is that purile crap on Alice - basically they read/comment on celebrity gossip and talk about what they watched on TV last night.

So they tried to go that way with London - which was HHHHORRIBLE (use best Bill Walton voice) -- and then bent back towards real sports with the Murphy/Lioota pairing, which is now Murph & Mac. The ESPN and FOX programming at that same time (6-9 pacific, 9-12 east) isn't much better, and selling local programming in drive time is much more profitable than sharing it with the networks.

> Wish ticket1050 would run espn or fox radio for listenable radio

Unfortunatly, radio/TV is about bottom line, and thye exist to make $$$$, not air your favorite programming. But I'm sure you know this if you are on this board... :)

> Gary Radnich and his laughing shctick is terriable him and

Again, they could air Dan Patrick on ESPN vs. Rome on 1050, but KNBRs own revenue would drop considerably. As awful as Radnich can be, he has a "name" for 20 years in bay area and is also visible on TV, many people like him, and so he has a built-in audience. Again, they lose $$ if they go network from 9-12 pacific

Rod was better by himself, now he is just Rick's sidekick who either agrees with Rick or disagrees with him in a jokey-insult manner. Pretty racially-and-talentwise emasculating for someone who used to be pretty good on his own. Note: Rod is an LSU grad and so is my Dad and I've been a Tiger fan since a child.

Rick is AWFUL. And the people who call in and kiss his white rump and yell how he should be Warriors coach - ugh, go away!!!!!

> at least thank goodness they run the Drive at least

Thank God for the Drive during my lunch bresk. Despite too much NASCAR-on-Fox for my taste, they do a LOT of NFL which is sorely lacking with the crap-for-football in the bay area.

These guys get HUGE ratings - Ralph is a radio institution, and Tom is now a nationally-known guy from his ESPN work.

> Wonder why they run the Espn radio orginated local sports

They actaully run local sports news from 6a until 7p, but use the ESPN bumper music on the local sports updates, so that it is "seamless" no matter if you are getting a report form a local knbr staffer, or an espn staffer. ESPN even offers locally-customized reports for thie larger markets when thier network staffer read the news. again, knbr680 is trying to weave themselves into fabric of espn - both bill themselevs as 'the sports leader' and 'the leader in sports programming'

Like you suggestions, but it is ALL about $$$ and they have no sports competition in the bay area, only other radio competition. All changes they make will not be to make a better sports station, but to make a radio station that gets better arbitron ratings for more $$ from ads sold, no matter how crappy it gets on an intellectual/content level.
