KNCT coverage into Austin

I wondered how it makes it that good into Austin. It comes in better into Austin than KHHL comes into San Antonio.

History is repeating itself here. A few months after KNCT signed on in the Fall of 1970, they were knocked off the air by a lightning strike, and were silent for several months while repairs were made (the TV transmitter wasn't affected.)

KNCT has always had a decent signal into the north part od Austin.

I can't pick it up from Jollyville and Braker anymore nor Oak Knoll and Research. Now I see why I can't. I hope they get it fixed because I listen to KNCT. Reminds me of KQUE Houston during it's 102.9 days.

Technically KNCT is a Waco-Temple-Killeen station, but it does have its fans in Austin.
I noticed poor reception and finally got around to looking at their website.
They had a lightning hit and are on reduced power until the antenna is rebuilt.
Here's a predicted coverage map they posted on knct.org.

As always, your results may vary.

KNCT is mostly easy listening (literally elevator music), and not news based as the public channel based in UT. There is not an easy listening station in Austin (no not counting 95.5)?

If you define easy listening as instrumentals and soft vocals, there are only three in the entire state of Texas: Killeen/Temple, Laredo and Corpus Christi (the latter of which also air religious programming). I believe the Valley had one that would rimshot Brownsville/McAllen from Mexico long after beautiful music faded from its prime, but I'm pretty sure it went regional Mexican quite a number of years ago.

In the US most easy listening stations have transitioned into adult contemporary.
Even soft rock legends like KKMJ in Austin, KQXT in San Antonio and KODA in Houston are now AC.

It was 90.9 from Reynosa which served the McAllen/Brownsville area and has become a bilingual Top 40 station since then. Also don't forget KAHL 1310AM and 103.7FM in San Antonio which is also easy listening.

Easy Listening (or elevator music, as we called it) started going away in the early 80's when some consultant reported people weren't hearing the commercials. It was instrumental versions of familiar songs. That's the niche KNCT has carved out for itself.
It was something different from what you would hear on KAHL or what used to be KLUP; that was Standards, often branded Music of Your Life. It has more vocals and more original versions of songs.
Adult contemporary has very little in common with either.
I find it odd that no-one has come up with a modern 'music of your life' for baby boomers... eclectic mellow? Old-age New-Age? Modern easy listening?
Anyone wants to try it, let me know. I'll show you how to make it work.

Acutally it reminds me more of the old KYND 92.5 than KQUE, KQUE would mix Standards and Big Band music in.
