Listening for a while this morning, I must admit the station sounds great. The show was a little off, but that can be expected and we know it is a temporary thing. However it seems a real effort is being made to skew older and get more Gen-Xers to return to the station. Here is a block of music from this morning:

Devo- Girl U Want
Blur- There's No Other Way
Death Cab for Cutie- Cath
Soundgarden- Burden in my Hand
Yeah Yeah Yeahs- Zero
XTC- Mayor of Simpleton
Rise Against- Audience of One
They Might Be Giants- Don't Let's Start
REM- It's the End of the World

Six out of nine songs played released prior to 1996, 3 of which were late 80's. That to me shows somewhat of a shift in the music. I will have to listen more today and over the next few days to make sure this wasn't a fluke. If so, then I think the End is heading in the right direction. Now let's get Robin & Maynard doing mornings. There shouldn't be any issues since BJ Shea would be on a different floor! =)

Totaly agreed. That's a nice playlist snapshot. And I'd be all for hearing R&M back on the air.

I think Robin and Maynard would be a horrible idea. They were horrible on 100.7, they would be horrible on 107.7. That would really be a way to kill the station. By the way DJ No Name is returning on Wed. afternoon 2pm-6pm.

Are you saying he gets the slot, is getting a shot at it or just filing a hole?

I think No Name is a talented guy but I can't help but wonder why he's been given the boot so many times, and yet they keep bringing him back? He obviously never burned any bridges with management or they wouldn't be giving him another chance. But if his prior exits had something to do with struggling ratings, what makes them think this time would be any different?

If this is a permanent thing, I wish him the best. He is by far more talented than anyone they currently have on air, and I'll be anxious to see who fills the other slots.

This freshly-minted 40 year old would love to see The End shift their playlist toward what they used to play. Plus some "classic" alt rock would be great. I think others have mentioned that the younger crowd doesn't listen to radio much. If that's the case, skew older and bring people like me who have a decent income to lavish on advertisers. ;D

Playlist looks solid, now if they'd balls up and get the proper jock(i.e. Rosetti,Keller,Marco Collins, etc.)to augment it,the station would be running on a full tank again.Myself and others would love to hear it happen.

The End's website shows picture of No Name, as well as some gal named Jamie White. From what I read she used to be a DJ in LA. Said there will be more names added. Wonder who else they have lined up and how long this "guest host" thing goes on before someone or some team is in place? 2 weeks? 1 month? 3 months? Maybe someone like DJ Dan who is familiar with the books can tell us an ideal time for the end to have a permanent team in place.

I'm not DJ Dan but I can tell you that next Thursday 4/2 is when the Arbitron diary goes away for good and replaced by the PPM. Seems like that would be a good time to make a change because you'll be able to see the results in 30 days, although it won't be considered "currency" in the advertising world until the end of June.

By the way, R&M on KNDD? A 50-something woman and a 60-something guy? Probably not a great fit, although I'd love to see them replace Ron and Don on KIRO.

Is the End's "playlist" soon to be more talk?

Jamie White?

I just googled a few things on Jamie White and I have guesses about what might be coming but if anybody has more facts go ahead and trump this.

"If" she is getting mornings that sounds like a big change and heavy talk and heavy reaction. Which they'll probably take.

Over 40. Does she have any or much music interest / cred? Or is it going to be Loveline in the mornings? If they go this way sounds like they are going after Bob Rivers or balancing out their corporate wide morning offerings in the market to listeners and advertisers, a flipside to the BJ Shea show. And younger or racier than Marty Riemer?

Setting up for a split of more talk day / more music nights & weekends thing, again? DJ No Name probably is the right transition piece for afternoons if they go this way but I doubt it lasts. If it goes this way at all of course.

I noticed the music changes, and I've been digging it. (FWIW, I'm 39...)

I think Mike Kaplan's doing a good job with what he's got.

Maybe it is just a one-off visit by Jamie White.

Hope the music shift isn't just bait to attract for talk aimed at 30-50 year olds.

My guess is they might be going after an edgy local morning show similar to that of BJ Shea, but the show they have in mind is being anchored by male host, female co-host, and one sidekick/producer. It will NOT be predominately talk and they will play around 5-6 songs per hour. This method has worked for them in the past.

Listening to DJ No Name so far today, he is an ideal afternoon jock. Let's be honest though, Mike Kaplan probably has a list of talent he would love to put on in these open slots. I would bet they range from former staffers (Jim Keller, Andy Savage, Bill Reid) that were at the helm during the stations more successful years, to others who have succeeded in other major markets but are currently on the beach. But his hands are tied if the company is not willing to increase the station's budget to allow for it. If that is the case, then he will be forced to continue to staff very inexperienced and unqualified jocks for the majority of the dayparts.

Why does the supposed list of people only consist of former staff? Is there nobody else qualified?

Oh I'm sure there will a handful of out of towners trying out for the different openings. This is my guess, but I think there is a TON of pressure to get it right this time. Doesn't seem like corporate will allow local managment to contantly tweak things on the End for another couple of years. This is pretty much it. It either works this time or talks of a flip will emerge. Except for some decent numbers that Adam pulled (thanks to him being a celebrity and also the ability to book A-list guests), other out of town shows have had no success over the last few years. How long did Lazlo last? What about Marconi? I think he lasted a full 36 shows before being given the axe. That's why we hear No Name back on for a few days. Wouldn't surprise me the least bit to hear the likes of Dick Rossetti, Jim Keller, Andy Savage pop up over the next month or so trying out for a spot.

Re: Jamie White

If she is considered a talent, I don't want talent. Or at least that type.
Gave the show a few quick listens and would never listen to her again.

Give me music. Not 6 songs a hour, a full serving.
Have almost never heard an extended talk show that I wanted to listen to straight thru.
Most I could handle would be stretches with vintage Bob Rivers show where Spike, Joe or Kaci were the focus or interplaying well.

I am in LA and used to listen to Jamie and Danny on Star 98.7. It was really fun to tune in and hear her online on the End. She was a little rusty, and I thought she sounded much better on Thursday with 45 minutes of sleep and with Dan than she did with No Name. I guess being off the air for a few years will make you rusty. I would tune in online since the morning scene here in LA is pretty week. I also really like the music on the End. Whoever is the music director is doing a great job! Does anyone know if/when a decision is being made? Are they doing more auditions next week?

KNDD Mornings

I thought Adam Carolla was pulling in the best numbers on the End out of all of its dayparts? Then why in the world would you consider putting on 1 person in the morning spinning tunes? I know it provides a good alternative for males who want music and not all talk like their sister station KISW provides. But if Carolla's show was getting better ratings than the all music shifts throughout the day, why not put on something similar?
