KNEW Brand change

My only thought is that the "Stimulating" thing is obviously not working for them (even though its worked for KFI for many years)...so the branding change to a very popular and healthy brand (Fox News) seems like a no-brainer to me.

I assume KNEW will continue to be primarily talk, with Fox News cut-ins and Fox News on the hour , so it's a bit misleading to call it ___"News Radio" which generally has been taken to mean all news. But if it gets them more listeners, it will do the job as intended.

KSFO has also used the "Hot Talk" branding for a number of years. KNEW was originally going to be "The Buzz," but that lasted about a week before a market manager killed it. KNEW also used "Independent Conservative" for a while, until Savage claimed he invented the term and raised hell about them using it. They then just used "Talk 910" as a brand for a while before appropriating the "More Stimulating" slogan. It's all pretty much an aside now, since the people meter records what the panelist is hearing. No call letters or slogan to write down to get credit, a lot or maybe all of the beauty contest aspect of ratings is gone in metered markets.

In the grand scheme of things, isn't "stimulating talk radio" just another mundane Clear Channel trademark in the vein of Kiss? I just did a Google search of "stimulating talk radio" and came up with the websites of KFI, plus KHBZ in Honolulu, both CC stations, and a few others - including, interestingly enough, CBS' KLIF in Dallas... Also, didn't CC's KSTE/Sacramento also get branded with the "stimulating talk radio" tag for awhile, as well?

Sure it's just a "mundane" slogan (actually, it's not a 'trademark'). It's just a way of getting people to forge an identification with your product. When the station is popular (KFI), the slogan will stay around for years. When your station's not popular (KNEW), the slogan will have a short shelf life.

It's not just Clear Channel - CBS does it too. LA has had "The Wave" (94.7) for more than 2 decades because the station has largely been successful. The Bay Area had "The Wave" (93.3) for only about a year because the format was lame, and nobody was listening. "Star" has actually been cycled through twice - it didn't work in the early 90s for "Star FM" (98.9/99.1), but it seems to be working OK for Clear Channel.

I remember for awhile in the mid-70s, KFRC and KHJ's jingle-slogan was "We do it for you." At the same time, McDonald's slogan was "We do it all for you." Top 40 radio and cheese burgers. Go figure.

This is nothing new, of course. I remember as an LA kid of the 1960s , I listened to 93/KHJ and was just amazed when I heard the first station that sounded just like it. I no longer remember if the one I heard first was 136/KGB or 610/KFRC... but of course, there was also KYNO, KAFY, KENO, KGW, CKLG, CKLW, and a number of others.

I'm not surprised about this change in news service. At this station I work for, we wanted to have the "Fox News flag" to get even more listeners, but, it came at a cost, we had to dump Lou Dobbs and they forced us to run John Gibson to complete the deal...ugh. I understand Fox News did the same thing here.

Unbelievable. Savage is an unchecked bully. He has tried to intimidate the management at every station he's infected with his presence. It didn't work for him at KSFO, but apparently it's had some impact at KNEW. Currently, he's been terrorizing the PD at another local station with his scathing emails to the PD, cc to the owner. He's his own worst enemy, and has a punk attitude.

Well, this is the guy who got his people to break his contracts with Sirius Radio and XM Radio so they couldn't carry him anymore.

Actually "More Stimulating Talk Radio" is a registered trademark, first applied for in 1994 by Cox (owner of KFI at the time) and now owned by Capstar, one of the companies taken over by Clear Channel.

Meaning that Savage is already wearing out his welcome at KTRB? I find that hard to believe. I think KTRB/860 is a great fit for him, and I'd be willing to venture he'll be on their air for a long, long time.

...But if Savage flames out at KTRB, what's next for him locally? KDOW/1220?

LOL...Savage will NOT be on KTRB for a long, long time. He's wired for self-destruction. If you haven't worked with him, then you just don't understand. He...is...INSANE...and is incapable of being happy. I've seen management start out as big boosters for him only to want to just be rid of him within 6 months. He drains people out.

My favorite Savage Weiner story is from an SF Chronicle article written about him a few years ago:

Savage was walking in downtown San Francisco when he came upon the SFPD making an arrest. The police were being filmed by a camera crew. Savage apparently thought the camera crew were some left-wing journalists there to get damaging video evidence of police brutality, or something. So he started heckling the camera crew - yelling at them to stop harrassing the police and let them do their job.

After a few minutes of this, one of the SFPD officers breaks away, and walks over to tell Savage to shut-up and move on. As it turns out, the camera crew was from COPS (or a similar show), and was there filming at the invitation of the SFPD

I would've preferred "Newstalk 910 KNEW" or "Newsradio 910 KNEW". Of course they can't be "Rush Radio 910 KNEW" since Citadel has him on their KSFO 560 AM...

Of course. And they can't be "Ronn Radio 910 KNEW" either, because Citadel has him on KGO 810 AM. And they can't be "Radnich Radio 910 KNEW" either...

What was the point again?

I think the Fox News branding is something they had to pick up to air Josh Gibson.

...Or, perhaps, Fox News is a really huge brand name that's recognized instantly by millions, and they wanted to tap into that.

No...that couldn't possibly be the reason. I'd prefer "Boss Radio - the Big 910."
