KNHC to HD

paper says:

"-- KNHC-FM (89.5) is launching its spring membership drive this weekend. What's different about this fundraising drive, says general manager Gregg Neilson, is that the student-run station at Nathan Hale High School is looking for money for both operations and a capital campaign. Neilson said of the $135,000 the station hopes to raise each of the spring and fall drives, $110,000 from each will go to operations.

The balance will be for a planned conversion of KNHC to digital HD broadcasting. The station has $50,000 in matching funds and some cash in reserve to complete the $130,000 project. Neilson said the station hopes to convert by the end of this year, and plans to add a second channel using HD technology --"

Yeah good luck with that. What a benefitial way to spend hard-earned donation money. I'm sure the five people with HD radios in the Seattle market will enjoy the techno on a alternate HD channel. Until the major auto makers put HD radios in cars for free, nobody will care. (Okay other than the engineers and PD's with HD capable radios in their cars)

I'm going to have to agree with Kelly on this one. I happen to have an HD tabletop radio and love it. But for a high school educational station that claims a huge audience on the internet, it doesn't appear this is a good use of their funds. It would be better if they used this money instead to fund exceptional programming and stipend$ to adult volunteers. Of course, if their transmitter kicks the bucket, that would be the time to make the HD investment.

I have to agree with Kelly and FMSteve.

Wasn't there a story about a year ago where KNHC was barely able to keep afloat, even with their pledge drives? Reminiscent of trying to buy filet mignon with food stamps.
