Knicks/WNBC-AM

Is it true that the Knicks were on WNBC-AM? If so, how long were the Knicks on WNBC 660?

You might get a more specific answer, but as I was 100% certain I remembered listening to Marv call games on there, I tried googling specifics, and came up empty. I did fimd out the team was on WCBS for a short time in the 63-64 time frame. Maybe 2 seasons, and post Wilt 100.

Perhaps someone can provide specific fact, but I wanna say the Knicks were on 66 as WNBC for several (5-8 years). I'm gonna guess they carried the Knicks until WHN picked them up. Shaky "info," but the team was definitely on 66 as WNBC for a spell.

The Knicks were on WNBC-AM-660 in 1965 (1 year); then back from 1970-1973 (4 years); and finally from 1985-1987 (3 years).

According to my records... in 1965 Bill Mazer did play by play; from 1970-71, Marv Albert called the games alone; John Andariese joined Marv starting in 1972, and in 1973, Cal Ramsey and Bob Wolff also helped out.
In 1985, it was Albert and Andariese, and when those two switched to TV (MSG) in 1986, Ernie Grunfeld and Jim Karvellas took over the mic on WNBC-AM. On October 7, 1988, 660 became WFAN as the 1988-89 season was getting underway.

The New York Rangers were also on WNBC-660 during the same times the Knicks were on.

And I'm pretty certain that the teams, through their parent company (Madison Square Garden), bought the airtime and sold the commercial spots.

In fact, during this time, not every regular-season game of either team were broadcast on radio. WNBC generally broadcast all home games of the two teams, and away games not televised on WOR/WWOR-9 (during most of the 1970's, 20 or 25 regular-season away games of each team were televised each year; by the mid-1980's, about 30 away games of each would be on WOR/WWOR). Televised road games during the regular-season were generally not broadcast on radio back then.

Between WNBC's two tenures as Knicks/Rangers flagship, the old WNEW-1130 carried both teams. Ironically today as WBBR, 1130 sometimes broadcasts whichever team can't be accommodated by WEPN because both are playing at the same time.

During the playoffs, whenever possible, all postseason games of both the Knicks and Rangers were broadcast by "66 WNNNNNNBC", even if some playoff games were televised by WOR/WWOR or on network TV.

Today, both teams still share the same kind of radio deal, although MSG now pays WEPN-98.7 for the airtime. And every game of both teams is now heard on radio: If both the Knicks and Rangers are playing at the same time, WEPN gets one game (usually, but not always, whichever team plays at home) and MSG arranges for another station to pick-up the other game (usually, but not always, the team playing on the road).

From the Knicks media guide 2012-13 - http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/media/2.0/teamsites/knicks/201213_Media_Guide.pdf
(from Table Of Contents select "The Fourth Estate")
Goes to show: don't believe everything that's written in Wikipedia. I had been fairly sure in my mind that the Knicks (and Rangers) had moved to 660 from 1050 in the early 1970s. The lists below seem to be accurate - feel free to adjust, if necessary.

Agree with Joseph Gallant's post about the road TV games not being on radio, etc.
It wasn't until the majority of the Knicks games (home + road) were on MSG Network that all games were on radio (likely sometime in the mid-1980s).

Tip o' the hat to AlexBrowne as well who had the same info as below.

We'll give you both the radio and TV history while we're at it - a little trip down memory lane:

A quote from the media guide:

When usually I came to visit him at dusk there was nothing to do. He stood in the shack, counting tickets and rubbing his belly.
The radio was always on. “Man, have you dug that mad Marty Glickman announcing basketball games – up-to-midcourt-bouncefake-
set-shot, swish, two points. Absolutely the greatest announcer I ever heard.” He was reduced to simple pleasures like these.
