KNIT 1480 update

They are in the CRS Building on the 6th floor. That is located in east Dallas near Mesquite at I30 and Jim Miller road.

Strangely enough, today (11/14/12) marks THIRTY YEARS since KBOX signed off the air. The late Len Mohnkern delivered the final newscast right at midnight, and announced the calls for the very last time.

The KBOX heyday was half a century ago, thus irrelevant to virtually all of today's listening audience. Anyone who remembers that time is long gone from any saleable demographics.
Making me feel old and obsolete! I grew up down the street close to McCree and Ferndale back in the '50s and '60s. Engineer that was out in the transmitter house took me and a buddy down to Crabtree's Electronics on Ross one day probably in 1962 or so, first time we'd ever seen anything like that place. Encouraged a hobby (electronics) that resulted in a career for me. I was listening the moment they changed from Top 40 to Country, and I began listening to KVIL FM at the time was Top 40 and I bought my first FM Stereo tuner. Of all the hundreds of times I went by KBOX up and down Audelia Rd or McCree I never thought to take a picture of the shrubs in front! But there is an old aerial view online I've seen that shows the K B O X shrubs.

I checked out KBXD today going home. On my 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee's stock stereo, 1480 had a good day signal heading south of Lawton OK on I-44 close to the Texas state line. A Bible teaching program was on (yawn). Checked it again on 287 around Decatur and 1480 was strong.. Audio processing could use a little more bass for music.

But heading east on I-30 after sundown 1480's night signal is just pitiful. I could barely hear it in Arlington around Cooper and Matlock rd (I did pick up a faint ID from KQAM 1480 in Wichita KS at that time!) Then the signal started coming in strong near the I-20 cloverleaf, then started dying around Mesquite. A live and local DJ (wow) was playing southern gospel music.

1480 has a decent signal north of McKinney during the daylight hours (better than 1540), at night it's KQAM out of Wichita with no evidence of KBXD in the background.

That's consistent with Radio-Info's nighttime coverage area map. It's a sad fact that only 3 AM stations in DFW cover the whole metro at night. While it's amazing 4 Wichita KS AM stations (1070, 1330, 1410, 1480) can be heard in Texas good to fair at night.

Here's one of the reasons 1410 is heard so well in DFW at night:
After 1410 had the fire and burned to the ground the station was sold to Steckline. After the sale the directional antenna system was completely refurbished, new sample lines, feed lines, and most important the ground system. The array (five tower) was using the original ground system from the on-air date in the 50's. I literally lived next door when I was the chief and jocked on the FM in the late 70's. I'd walk out my backdoor, cross the antenna field to go to work... Talk about a short commute...

I remember the fire, a friend who worked for KMYR/KSGL told me about it and how devastating it was to them.

Im working on a photobucket album of my photos I've taken or collected off the web of Wichita Kansas and a few Oklahoma radio stations over the years. There's some shots of the old studios after KEYN moved out and before the fire.. hopefully they wont make you too depressed Jay!

To me it was so sad to see how the facility had declined over the years. the photos were excellent. I helped install the Continental Power Rock. The Autogram/Collins console and I had spent a lot of time together on the 6p to 10p airshift. As goofy as this sounds, it was an old friend...

To avoid further hi-jacking the thread, I've PM'd you so if you get a chance check it out.
Thanks again
