KNIZ 90.1 FM Gallup, New Mexico goes Dance overnight

KNIZ 90.1 FM in Gallup, New Mexico as of tonight has launched an overnight Dance format as Surge. It airs nightly 11pm-3am Mountain Time. KNIZ doesn't currently offer an internet stream just yet, but the exact same feed is airing on www.surgeradio.org

Just as quickly as it came, it also went, only an 8 day stint of simulcasting nightly on KNIZ, I'm afraid. Tuesday night was the final night. Surge's time on KNIZ came to an end because the owner/manager/whoever decided not to pay the internet bill for a few months (therefore it was shut off), as well as the utility bill (they received a notice on their door saying that their utilities would be shut off in 3 days), and last, but not least, the tower rent hasn't been paid in a few months either. Our contact, the guy who arranged Surge's agreement with KNIZ, has quit the station, and we've been unable to make contact with anybody else at the station. The company's phone number, which is listed with the FCC, is disconnected.

I drove in to the area last week, whatever DJ was on had the station all overmodulated, foul language, no legal IDs... Not to mention, I was their only source of income, and I just got an email from them saying their board had denied my request. They never should have pushed Joe out, he was the only one there who knew what he was doing.

This station won't be around much longer. This company's station KKGT in Grants has already gone silent, and is up for sale.

Do you know if KNIZ 90.1 is still airing dance music?

Speaking of dance music in New Mexico, 95.9 The Lion was playing some 2000s dance music yesterday. It's located about 100 miles east of Albuquerque and was the only station receivable for about 30 miles.

No, they only replayed our programming overnight for 8 days. Our contact quit the station, then the station had a board meeting and decided not to continue our programming. I was their only source of income, at $200 per month, which didn't nearly cover their rent, tower rent, utilities, etc. but I would think it was better than the owner of Available Media just forking out all the money with no return.

I drove through Gallup a few weeks ago, and tuned in for the heck of it. They were playing some accordion music with what sounded like a train rolling over railroad tracks in the background for about 10 minutes. Then their legal ID, a hard rock song, an announcement saying they're looking for local musicians to submit music, then more accordion music with the train again. Weird station... Then whenever they have DJs on the air, they just throw their iPod on shuffle, uncensored music, no IDs, not even the legal ID.

I can give you a overnight relay for surge radio for free at The Hot FM,, a LPFM in my area on 87.9.. Has quiet a coverage area too for 7 watts

@Mid West Clubber, give me a call at 661-202-9916 anytime 8am-10pm Pacific, I'd love to discuss this further.

Alright bud.... Its Early AM now,, and im sure middle of the night in Cali,, But Ill call you later.... 8)

I was only using those Hot FM IDs till i could get some more profesional ones....The station name is Mystery 87.9,, NONStop Dance For Martinsville. Here is our site with streaming audio. http://mysteryradio879.weebly.com .. I was thinking we could put Surge Radio on Beginning at 6 PM Evenings and run it till 6 AM the next morning.... We can go shorter if you like.

I just wonder why you spent $200 a month to broadcast Surge to the middle of nowhere on KNIZ. I don't know how far its signal went.

This guy, Joe Gonzales, called me up wondering if I had any old equipment I could donate to KNIZ, because he was trying to improve the station. I told him that I could pay $200 per month to rent air time, and he really liked the idea. Then 8 days later he quit the station, and took all his stuff with him. He also hosted the morning show called "The Daily Mash Up" on KNIZ, which I then let him do on Surge for awhile. Now, he's busy working for the Fire Department as a First Responder.

He's working to launch an LPFM there in Gallup once the filing window opens again.

I guess the main reason that I did it was because I was hoping it would draw some publicity to Surge, and actually attract a bigger audience.

Surge is a great Dance HITS and More type station.. I would like ot do some more relays of Surge... but since my station is just a Small Part 15, and unlicened,, I opted not to TX 24/7 anymore... Ken is a good fella,, and very smart too

Speaking of New Mexico...does anyone else remember when 106.3 FM in ABQ (Albuquerque) had the calls KDNR? I'd heard that this station was supposedly all-dance around 1995/1996, but I was never able to confirm that. Was it true?
