KNOE AM 540 S-O-L-D

Word on the street says that AM540 is going across the street to The Radio People.

What's the fallout look like?

And the more prominent question at this point.....how long until FM102 goes?

Discuss......

Yeah, duh...it was all automated programming on AM. There was no live programming on AM. Don't you think, though, that both stations would have been sold at the same exact time? 2 sticks are worth way more than just 1...just saying...

Ok, maybe fallout wasn't the best word choice. I'm talking about market wide. I hear that The Radio People are going to let one of their AM's go dark so they can get the KNOE stick...but a couple quick things.

1) AM540 DOES have one employee, and from what I hear...he is pretty much solely responsible for the station. I'm an outsider, but that's what I've heard.

2) The Radio People are going to have to work hard to get another FM stick. They had to split stock umpteen ways and form a new company just to get 92.7 in their house. Today, in the day of cluster ownership, it's hard to unload more than one stick to anyone. Radio People are pretty much at their limit. Who knows if Opus will take it....but I would love to see a another local owner. Sure, George seems to be putting actual cash flow into the station, unlike a former General Manager chose to do. But personally, I don't see FM102 hanging around in the Noe Camp much longer. To radiojock3...you can get the same $ selling them separately as you would packaged...maybe more. In 2006, how many one station operations do you see these days?

Well the good news is (assuming they shut down KMLB) is there will be one less right-wing noise machine polluting the airwaves.

I've always found it strange that TV (KNOE-TV8/CBS) pays the bills there and many of the loudmouth talkers in the 'Fox camp' on the AM often bash CBS News. Think back to the Dan Rather incident for a prime example.

KNOE 540 Sold? Uh, I dont see anything in the FCC's CDBS database or on Radio & Records as of 11am eastern this morning....

That's why I said this....

Nothing is official on it yet....but everyone is talking about it.

It's true. This was on KNOE's website but they've since taken it down:

MONROE (TV8) - Noe Corp LLC today announced that the company has reached an agreement to sell KNOE-AM540 News/Talk/Sports to Holladay Broadcasting which currently operates six other radio stations in the Monroe market under the Radio People banner.

In announcing the sale of KNOE-AM, Noe Corp LLC President George Noe noted that, "This is a strategic move for our company and will allow us to concentrate our full efforts on our core, profitable broadcast businesses, KNOE-TV with our CBS and CW channels, and KNOE-FM."

Noe said the main motivation to sell KNOE-AM at this time was the company's desire to develop the tract of land in West Ouachita Parish off Good Hope Road where the AM transmitter and towers are located. "The property on which the 4 AM towers and transmitter are located is much more valuable as a residential real estate development than as a tower and transmitter site. We looked into the feasibility of relocating the towers to a different location but in the end decided that the expense involved in such a move was prohibitive."

Under the terms of the agreement the Radio People will take over the operation of KNOE-AM540 December 1, 2006 under a Time Brokerage Agreement (TBA) and run the station while the deal awaits regulatory approval which is expected sometime in the first half of 2007. After the sale is complete KMLB-AM will move to the 540 frequency.

A Legend is Sold
(November - 7 - 2006)

MONROE (TV8) - A broadcast institution is in transition. Noe Corp announces today it's sale of KNOE AM 540 News/Talk/Sports Radio to Holladay Broadcasting. TV8's Will Moses reports, the sale will be a good switch.

This old building bears more than 60 years of history and tradition of broadcast excellence. KNOE AM 540 got it's start in 1944 -- right at the height of world war two. It was the only station in the country built during this time. soon it will be a distant memory.
Noe corp has sold KNOE AM 540 to Bob Holladay, who currently owns six radio stations known collectively as the radio people.
Noe Corp president george noe..says the sale will allow the company to focus on its core, profitable businesses..k-n-o-e-tv and f-m.
Meanwhile, Noe corp wants to move the a-m transmitter and towers off this tract of land in west ouachita parish, so it can be developed. Said KNOE General Manager Roy Fronstenson, "this is a strategic move for the company. it is a good business move that just makes sense for us right now."
Beginning december first, the radio people will take over operation of KNOE AM 540.
After regulatory approval, which is expected sometime in the first half of next year, the radio people's KMLB AM talk radio will move to the 540 frequency.
Program Director Cory Crowe -- says the marriage of strong programming to a reputable frequency makes for a radio powerhouse.
Crowe says the 5,000 watt signal will carry k-m-l-b far beyond the audiences it now reaches on a-m 14-40. Crowe said,
"we're excited! it gives us a regional presence. knoe can be heard all over louisiana, arkansas and parts of texas and parts of mississippi. so it takes us from kind of a northeast louisiana station to more of a regional station." After the sale is finalized and the fcc gives it's stamp of approval, knoe am 540 will no longer exist. Said Frostenson, "well there's certainly, i think, a little bit of nostalgia connected with this sale because this was the original monroe broadcast property that the Noe family put on air."
Crowe said, "by this merger, it's a good marriage for both. we'll take the best programming that kmlb currently had, the best programming that knoe currently has, and sometime in the next six months or so, we'll begin to merge the programming together and come up with one really super news/talk and information station."
Keeping with a longstanding tradition of a-m broadcasting, and breathing new life into AM 540.

I wonder if KNOE will move to the KMLB 2-tower site on 165 North. 1440 could be shut off, 2 new towers built, and AM540 could then move to this site, or will a new site be built? Also, will Holliday fork over some cash for a new transmitter and equipment to improve the 540 signal, which has seemed to slip a bit in the last few years, undoubtably from neglect.

Reread the story.. the events will be this

They are buying the license of KNOE basically.... They will move KMLB down in frequency to 540 once they finish either building up a new tower setup or getting the FCC to modify the original license as the whole reason KNOE am is being sold, is so the Noe family can develop the land and make more money off the land where the Am tower currently sets in Ouachita parish.

It could be something if KNOE moves up to 1440 and flips formats (as the new 540 is supposed to be a blend of current KNOE and KMLB) .. But that is for holliday to decide.

Moving one of these low frequency stations can be a real engineering challenge and comsume a lot of capital resources. Where ever a 540 kc antenna system winds up, it will have to occupy a substantial parcel of real estate. I worked at a 550 directional once and the distance between tower 1 and tower 4 was .778 miles! A tower that works for 1440 kc will be too short to produce minimum field at 540 kc unless it is 200 degrees tall. A quarter wave antenna at 1440 is 170 feet where at 540 it is 455 feet. They (KNOE-AM) moved to 540 from 1390 in about 1964. It will more than likely have to remain directional if 5 kw is to be maintained in the day. The interfering contours lay WAY out there on these lowfers. Night limits might be a different story now because a lot more stations are on the air and rss restrictions may be tighter. On the other hand, Canadian and Mexican protection requirements have changed since 1964. It will be interesting to see what they do with it but it will neither be easy or inexpensive, time will tell.

I've been to the KNOE-AM site. The 4 towers are actually not too far apart from each other (4 in a ablong box). The 5KW-Day signal uses 2 towers, the 1KW-Night uses all 4. The daytime signal nulls are so slight, that it almost could be considered a non-directional station right now - (the nighttime directional signal is a different story however.)

You can understand the business decision but just hate to see these old AM’s get thrown away or reduced to class “D” unprotected night status. That may be a consideration while we are speculating but the night power may be as little as 35 watts.

Well today's the day that The Radio People take the reigns of KNOE AM 540. Anyone around Monroe care to post what's going on with that amplitude? What do the top of the hour IDs sound like? I guess they dropped the "a James A. Noe station" bit...

Actually, the switch went over very well. It's not yet as smooth as it was running at KNOE, but the proper programming, id's, etc... are working correctly.

The folks over at KNOE were great to work with and very helpful. If only it could be that way with everyone.

The on again, off again sale of KNOE/AM 540 is evidently on again. The FCC's Consent to Assignment was issued yesterday, January 29, 2008, (http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/prod/cdbs/pubacc/Auth_Files/1171947.pdf).

As a recap, this sale began in very late 2006. FCC consent was previously issued conditioned on Bob Holladay turining in the license for KMLB (1440 kHz). Holladay filed a petition for reconsideration, seeking to hold on to both stations, and the previous consent was then rescinded.

The new consent likewise is conditioned on turning in the KMLB license: "This grant is subject to the following condition: Consummation of this transaction is subject to the prior or concurrent cancellation of the license for KMLB(AM), Monroe, Louisiana (Facility ID #48636)."

Consummation of the sale must be completed within 90 days.

As of this moment there is no indication on the FCC Web site of any action on the KMLB license and the station remains on the air. Network programs are airing without local commercials inserted, complete with network audio cues appearing on air.

Well folks, I noticed today that only one tower stands at the KNOE-AM tower site on Good Hope Road in West Monroe. I'd like to know what kind of power they're running at night now. The old nighttime 1kW 4-tower array had a funky pattern with some nasty nulls, so they might actually have similar or even better coverage at 250W ND.
Anybody know what's going on there?
